I want to start by saying I am NOT mechanical at ALL. I have a 1985 DD Countach. I have owned it since 2008. The distributor went bad and rotor about a month ago so I had The distributor rebuilt and put a new rotor on. Got the car running but it’s not running good.
I am looking for a mechanic in my area that I can take it to. I live in a suburb of Detroit. If anyone knows of a good mechanic that can work on a carbureted countach I would greatly appreciate the referral. Thank you in advance.

    have you checked your wires?
Always best to start with simple first and then go complicated.

    Why not interested in Evans?
He worked on my CT and I did not have any problems(my wallet had problems though)

thanks for the wire suggestion, I think all simple areas have been covered. I need more of a expert to really look at it now. I really don’t want to ship it out across country. Gary Bobilief has been a great help over the phone.

I had someone tell me to try Chuck Cappela?? Anyone with experience with him? And could someone give me his number? I guess he is located in Royal Oak Michigan. Thanks in advance.

    Excellent.

Since what you have as described seems to be a tuning issue and not a mechanical problem, perhaps it can be taken care of in your garage, and after expert diagnosis over the phone with a specialist, it might be better to fly someone in than transport your baby to a shop and have it be stuck there for god-knows how long.

See what your local guy thinks first, then maybe confer with someone like Dugan over the phone and reach a decision on your preferred remedy.

I agree 100%!! Chuck is coming over my house one day next week ( I hope ) because he does not think it is a very big issue and he can possibly fix it in my garage.

I would be more than willing to fly a mechanic to my place and put him up if he could fix it right in my garage. I did not think that was an option. If all else fails and you don't mind I will be reaching out to you. Thanks for the help.

The Downdraft setup is relatively simple, I'm sure you'll have it flying again soon.

As Salvioli said to me last week looking at a F.I. anniversary: there are a lot of things in this engine bay....when something is not working well is a bit of a challenge to have it run right again, a carbed countach is much more simple and is easy to find a possible issue
he told me the F.I. power delivery (stock) has the engine pull less strong from 5000rpm and you feel the difference like it is much more than the quoted power (420 vs 455 hp)

I'm local and I work on my Countch. If I can help you, let me know.

  17. A fresh set of plugs can make all of the difference. I had a 70 Mini Cooper, I rebuilt the engine. It ran fine & then poorly. I really fought with myself to pull the plugs in an engine with 100 miles on it, but that was the problem.

I've had 4 different mechanics and a few different shops, and after all these years I think the best move is to find the best mechanic you can locally, and have him work on it in your garage. Even if a mechanic has no experience at all on a Countach, some of these people can do fantastic work. I've put a lot of miles on my car and it's been running flawlessly for about 3 years now, all because I had a local guy work on it who had no experience with exotic cars. My mechanic worked mostly on muscle cars previously, but the guy was a damn genius and when he would fix an issue, he would get it right the first time and it would not break again. This is what you need, someone who simply knows how cars work and can get the right materials and fix it right the first time. The caveat here is that you need to really vet your mechanic and maybe try him out on another car first before the Countach. Do your own homework on parts, buy your proprietary parts from the usual places (bullstuff, lambo, etc), and take your time and get it right. Every time I go to a shop they are backlogged with like 40 cars in the parking lot, makes me think my car will sit there for months when it could be done in my garage a lot faster. These cars are really not rocket science. They use lots of the same wires, fuses, rotor, etc that you can get at Autozone. It's all about having the determination to get it right and the skills to get into really tight spaces. Scott, if you've already tried 4 sets of spark plugs you already know that half of these parts are easy to get, you just need the right mechanic. In Detroit there's loads of muscle car guys, you should get to know some of them.

I'm sure it's heresy on this forum to say you don't need a specialist like Evans and Bobileff, but I really feel you don't, and I've had my car 11 years and done more driving than most owners here.

Curious if this problem was resolved successfully, how, and what the final outcome was.

Wonderful. Who helped you resolve the issue, and where is that person located? Always good to know who is talented to work on Downdrafts, and where they are.
