I need advice on how i should address someone who emailed me about a summer internship in either new mexico or california (naturally i would prefer california but im not about to turn Lockheed down if they offer me one in NM). The guy does have a PhD, but i dont know if its customary to refer to an engineer as Dr. I originally was planning on doing this but i figured i would check here just to make sure. It seems appropriate to ask here because the resume advice i recieved about a year ago for my original resume is probably why anyone is interested in me in the first place. Thanks in advance.

Ok just double checking. The letter seemed rather informal, so i wanted to make sure. He did give me his phone # so i might just call him tomorrow to show more interest.

One of Judge4re's favorite sayings is "that's DR Dumbass, to you". Hi Hun.

But, when in doubt... Always go with the more formal. If they prefer the less formal, they'll let you know.

Be it a medical doctor or a Ph.D, ALWAYS address him or her as Dr. Lets say I meet an engineer named Tony and notice that he has Ph.D on his business card, I always address him as Dr. Smith, etc.

Also, in social situations "Professor!" works well as you reach to shake his hand. (whether he is a professor or not- I've noticed a lot of MDs do this to each other)

If it's a woman PhD it's ok to address her as: "YO! HO!"

Or the ever popular: "Look here Bi-atch!"

Frankly, I always thought that the Ph.D./Doctor stuff was petty. But one thing I learned as a CPA is that you can never over do ass kissing. So kiss away.

Ever notice that we expect people to use the Dr. or Phd around their name, but many think it's silly for a lawyer to use Esq., or don't refer to them as such? I guess AJ calls me barrister and that's pretty cool (although I'm not a barrister nor an esquire yet!)..

Could be the fact that doctors and PhDs are trying to HELP people, rather than SCREW them.
