    Hello all --

Has anyone ever used a Dr. Paintchip repair kit on their car? I've got a few paint chips and nicks on the front bumper and behind the wheel wells that I'd like to take care of.

I could, of course, just take it to the closest dealer, but the thought of using this caught my attention.

    Any opinions?

I used it on my black car, and it is better than a standard touch up brush and bottle. On mine, where there is a chip, white shows through, so covering it in black is a huge improvement for starters. The paint is kind of weird, and you have to let it set a little, then rub/buff with a kind of thinner to remove it from the surrounding area and leave it in the chip. Easy to let it set too long and it is hard to remove from the surrounding paint. Also easy to remove it too soon, and it gets removed from the chip hole. Takes some practice, but looks fine from a distance.

Not great, but not too expensive to try.

    Thanks for the reply, Mule.

I went ahead and bought the kit. Figured for $50 it'll suit my needs just fine. Eventually I'll have the front bumper re-sprayed so I don't need anything absolutely perfect.

I've also noticed the white underbelly showing through where the red paint chips away.

I'll take a few before and after pics once I do the repairs.

I bought a kit a few months ago, just waiting for the ambient temp to warm up before trying, have high hopes though.

it was pretty useless for me. it either rubbed off or left a hazy and rough paint.

i just used the paint and applied it with a toothpick in multiple coats for deeper chips.

when i emailed dr chip, they said to try again. note there is no return policy. if they are confident with it, why not allow people to return it if unsatisfied? they charge 3-4x more than dealer's touchup and should take care of their customer.

some people had good results. i have no idea why there is a difference in results. i tried letting it dry with various durations. no success.

The key to get dr.colorchip to work to not to rub the paint that is in the chip too hard with the sealant.

It's best to make a hard edge with the cloth they give you and slowly work your way back to the chip area from the furthest part of the smeared paint. Throw their little brush away it's useless. Put on as little paint as you can to fill the chip. When it comes to take the extra paint off try not to get the sealant on the chip your filling. Dab the extra paint with the sealant and let it sit for a minute before starting to wipe it off.

The sealant will break down the paint and not pull the paint out of the chip you're trying to fix. I've used it on both my cars and my 25 yr old F-Car looks like it just rolled off the truck
from the factory. It works but like many things, it takes a little finesse.
