Thinking of taking the TR to the drag strip. Not for any smoke billowing burnouts, but just to be able to run her through her gears strong without being on a public road.

I know (BELIEVE me I KNOW) the issues with the transmissions/differentials in the TRs. I replaced mine with 512M tranny/diff.

    Any thoughts pro/con?

Buy a 5.0L mustang, you'll have more fun with it.

I tried thrashing the tr once, it was like yelling at my kids....it hurt me more than them :)

The point isn't to compete with another car. I did that years ago with a Buick Gran Sport. It is to exercise the TR in a controlled environment.

With the updated diff at least that wont break, tough call though, if you busted 1st gear, broke the main shaft or lunched the clutch you might feel like a moron. Even worse in front of a crowd. I would still be torn since I like pounding on a car from time to time.

    I like that idea too.
    Couple of points...
    1) Cost - $15 for strip, $250+ (in addition to any membership/training costs)
    2) Convenience - strip available every Wed & Fri. vs 7-9 events/yr

For the exercise factor i would agree with William, much more fun and (the car) on a road event rather than drag.

PS...i didn't mention competing against other cars :)

I don't think a 1/4 mile is enough to wring out the TR. Not sure you would even get through the gears. It is unfortunate that we don't have the roads and regulations here to really let the car run...

    Rob,

Personally, this is what comes to mind:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfTSvkcKRy8

A TR is not designed for straight line acceration. In my opinion, the stress you will put on the car isn't worth the experience. Also, I doubt that you will be particularly impressed.

    Regards,

    Art S.

For sure...TRs aren't drag-race friendly. If your good with a stick and a bit conservative you can make a few safe passes. I've told this story a few times but it is worth telling again. I once raced a friends 1968 Dodge Charger that had a 440 six-pak motor, auto trans, and 3.23 rear gears. He got the jump off the line but by the end of the quarter I beat him by about 2 or 3 car lengths. That video that ArtS linked to is quite depressing and obviously that TR driver was not confident or skilled at pushing the car. Here is a decent idea of what a TR can do:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIJ4ATgfNr4

Using a G-Tech Pro I registered a 13.45 sec. quarter time with my current TR with a trap speed of 109mph, which seems in line with what I've seen other cars do. If the TR had a tough trans and lower gears it would be quite formidable on the drag strip. But with it's "long legs" it's just not set up for that kind of "fun".

Either way....any car in the mid-thirteens is actually pretty quick for a 20 year old....very respectable.

Okay....I've sprayed myself down with fire-retardent and have an extinguisher handy....

A small clutch dump is fine but nothing north or 3-3500 or (b/c your new gear box is now not the weakest link) you'll be replacing your stubb axels.....and whatever you do don't use racing slicks!!

    have a blast... i did.

I any of you fixed as many broken TR gear boxes as I have you would share the opinion that it is a really bad idea if you plan on keeping the car. I have 2 here right now with broken gear boxes. They are getting very expensive to fix.

3rd, 4th and 5th are for having fun. 1st and 2nd are far to weak, so are the diff, ring gear bolts, main shaft and propellor shaft.

Mine will never go through a repair.....Guess why.

Took her to the strip tonight. Was very conservative in 1st. A little more agressive in 2nd and 3rd. Never shifted to 4th.

14.5 ET with 100+ mph. About what I expected (since I knew I wasn't going to push it off the line). I am sure I could do better but decided to only do the one run.

I knew the TR wasn't meant for straight line drag racing, but it did feel good to run her through the gears without worrying about the cops being around.

Now to head to the track for some REAL fun.

I guess you were telepathically sending me messages Brian, as I was reluctant to push 1st gear. I read your post after I got back.

I would be scared to drag the TR I am getting this spring, too. I don't even do this with my ZR1 - which probably has a lot stronger (and less expensive) clutch and transmission.

But I would like to have a dyno number on it as I will be doing some exhaust system work & tuning...just for comparison later.

Is there any concern about this? I assume that a dyno run only goes to about the peak HP RPM and not the redline, and that there is probably minimal load on the low gears and the clutch.

    Thanks, James

BTW, good for you on being so careful...I bet that this car whooped hard would be in the mid to low 13s...

A dyno wouldnt hurt, they start the pull in 4th after running it up to around 3000rpm sort of crusing along then punch it up to redline and let off. coast it back down in neutral. Make sure the dyno is calibrated for your 4th gear ratio as they assume its one to one like any domestic car. You'll get some odd ball reading like 170hp at the wheels if they dont, lol.

Posted earlier in this thread ... ET 14.5 100.7 mph. As I said, I took it REAL easy off the line. I am sure I could shave a second off if I really pushed it. I declined...
