Dragon Cloud

As many of you know, I fly for a living. In 15000 hrs, I've seen a few cool things. But check out this cloud formation I saw flying over the Pacific last year. The video doesn't do it justice. It was really strange looking. And the fact we were thousands of miles from land made it all that much stanger. No orographic lifting.

Very strange looking clouds. I would not want to fly any where near them.

I did a web search. Came up with this possible explanation.

Called "Kelvin Helmholtz instability clouds" and are created in an area of significant wind direction change.

Here is a pic of a set of them formed offshore near Seattle.

Very interesting. I have seen the northern lights several times while flying polar routes. Commercial flights, I was just self-loading freight.

 

Wow, very cool and odd formations.

After reading the possible explanation, I wouldn't go anywhere near them.

 

Found another pic of "K-H clouds". This time it was in Birmingham, AL, in 2011.

The other really unusual looking clouds you see pictures of every once in a while is a "roll cloud".
Don't know if there is a more scientific name for them, but it is strange to see such long, round formations in rows.

Not sure if those "roll clouds" are real or not.
I found the pics on the web.

If they are real, they are very strange indeed!
