I've just taken delivery of 5L of RedLine gearbox oil and booked a service bay in our car clubs garage this Saturday. Does anyone know what type of tool is needed to undo the drain plug & filler plug? Allen key or something special?

I'm being lazy & hope someone has done this recently.

    Thanx.... Mike

    10mm allen key socket.

    FYI

12mm is for the engine oil.

Just a little tip, be sure to pull the filler plug in the transfer case before you drain the gearbox and transfer case....just to be sure it will come off so you can refill after you drain!

I'm pretty sure the pan drain is 10mm allen, but the transfer case and transmission fill plugs are 12mm allen (at least they are on my 328). Not sure about the transfer case drain, but I think it is a normal hex bolt.

Mike, as has already been said you'll need 10 & 12 mm hex keys......make sure you take the ones that go on a ratchet rather than allan keys as you may need to use a longer breaker bar to get the filler plug out (start soaking it in WD40 now in preperation)

Thanks for your advice. I'll read the manual tonight as I'm not that familiar yet the term 'transfer case'. Does this mean I need more oil? I've got 5L of Redline and I'm sure the manual said sub 5L was required including 0.1L for topping up something on the clutch housing!

Be sure to replace the copper crush washers under the drain plugs with new washers. This will ensure that you don't have leaks.

    Mike,

The transfer case is the thingy on the clutch housing. You've got enough.

Typically one replaces the gear oil in the transmission and the transfer case at the same time. They are connected inside the engine. The manual says to fill the transmission through the overflow hole on the back of the tranny and then fill the transfer case through the filler on there. The tranny takes about 4 quarts, and the transfer case needs only about a cup of gear oil. The easy way to do it is drain both the transmission and the transfer case (two different drain plugs). Then pull the overflow plug on the tranny. Now fill the transfer case from the filler on that, and keep filling until gear oil comes out the overflow in the tranny. The oil will flow from the transfer case into the tranny. When it flows out the overflow in the tranny, they are both full. Now install the plugs again (with new copper crush washers) and you are done. The copper crush washers are cheap as dirt from Dennis McCann or Ricambi America. Buy a dozen at a time and you will never run out.

OK Guys, went home lunchtime & read the manual again and nothing in there to show how the two are linked so BIRDMANS explanation is great! I'll also buy a bunch of Copper washers.

    Thanks everyone,

    Mike
