    Good afternoon team!

So, I've researched feverishly today on the best way to drain the cooling system, and I still don't have a warm fuzzy. I would rather not drain the system using the petcock on the rear bank of the engine, it looked like a waterfall of disaster waiting to happen. I did however find tons of information on bleeding the system by the way.

    1. It seems that there was some talk of just removing one of the front coolant hoses near the radiator to drain the coolant - is this the case and if so which one do I drain.

    2. There was some mention of a petcock combined with a Scuderia Rampante hose somewhere that can be purchased to aid in draining the system - if so, where can I get it, from Dave Helms here in Colorado or through a supplier?

    3. Also, how much is fair to pay an independent shop for belt service & water pump replacement / service? I very much would like to go with Dave Helms in Boulder, but I want to know what is fair for this service so I have more intel going into a shop. I have gotten the car running and done the majority of the major service required (which has been a pleasure to do, 308's are very nice to work on) accept for belts and water pump, which I have no interest in doing.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

    Very respectfully,
    Shane Clarke

    Very nice!

Is this the kit I need for my 1981 308 GTSi 2v? Or, do I need the QV kit? Or, is there a different kit for my car?

    Very respectfully,

There is a small diameter hose running off one fo the coolant pipes at the front end, this si often the easies way to evacuate coolant. Getting the SRI hose kti and drain petcock in are both wise choices for the future though.

There are numerous threads about servicing costs...the short of it is that it isn 't simple and itemizable. I have a saved estimate template I often use for telling customer where it should start...that number is around $11k. It goes beyond a service and into correcting overlooked gremlins to provide a better quality ownership experience.

Use the search function, then find a good thread that you feel was informative and build on it if you feel the need.

    1) heater hose under the car.
    2) Buy it from Dave
    3) $2000 for a belt/tensioner/water pump only job. Although, it is never just those things.

    Captain,

Are you talking about a full timing belt service or just the waterpump and waterpump accessory belt?

I actually need the full timing belt service and I'd like to do the accessory belt service as well. I also think it would be a good idea to have them replace the water pump while they're in there to cover some more bases.

I called Ferrari of Denver today to get an estimate and they quoted me $2400 for full timing belt service including tensioners and accessory belt service. This sounded like a decent price and they guarantee their work as well. Does this sound a little high? I'm not sure if the tech meant that this price also would include water pump replacement since he left a message with one of my troops and she didn't get the details.

I've already done fuel pump, fuel accumulator, birdman fuse kit, all new relays, Engine Oil & Filter, Air Filter, Gear Box & Differential Fluid, Ignition Wires/Plug Extenders, Distributor Rotors, Distributor Caps, Ignition Coils, Fuel Filters & Spark Plugs. The car is running really well with all of this work, but I know that the belts need to be done since the car sat for over 5 years in a barn in Michigan. I'm not going to drive it until that service is done, I'm afraid that one of the belts will break and then I'd be screwed.

    Very respectfully,
    Shane Clarke

Nope, yours must be done the old fashioned way as there are no hoses low enough with access to splice one in easily.

You are falling into the trap I have preached about for years, thus approaching this from the wrong direction.

What does the car NEED? Not what some maintainance chart drawn up before the car was built, still in the design stages, says you should do, What does it NEED?

The moment you can define and accurately answer that question, I can accurately answer your question. Until that point you are 'guessing' and 'assuming' and we all know how that ends. G&A and blindly following a 40 yr old chart is what has led to these cars being thought of as unreliable. Anyone that can throw out a number for this type of thing is doing nothing but the same and works with blinders on to stay on 'budget'... think that provides good value and a warm fuzzy?

Dont throw any of your old parts away, blindly replacing them with new as appears has already started is a move you will in time regret, that was poor economy, bet on that!

While replacing my gt4's front heater hoses I popped in the SR petcock in tonight. What a funky little add on that is! Controlled evacuation of coolant. The small wonders.

You need to ask for it in addition to the hose kits but well worth it IMHO.
