Hi guys, I'm buying a 6-speed 2008 Porsche Turbo with Michelin Pilot SuperSports in Denver
in the next week or two, and was wondering if it's totally idiotic to drive the car home to SF?

The tires are obviously not recommended for winter, but I'm a California coast native and don't understand things like snow/icy highways etc. If I need to ship it I will.

    Thanks!

It's not that idiotic. First, we have had some exceptionally warm weather here for a while and there's a chance that the mountain highways are dry and clear. Someone who has been over Vail pass lately can chime in with that.

But if not, you can take the southern route through new mexico and arizona and be okay.

Or do what i did, drive until the weather is a concern. Then find a tow company with a flatbed to drive you and your car over the slick passes. I worked for me driving a car from Salt Lake City to Denver. I hit some unpredicted weather. Weather radar maps help but when a quick weather pattern moves in, you need to be ready to change your original plan.

The way to go is I25 N to I80 W. I70 ends in Utah on I15. It should be no problem as long as the forecast is good. I understand I80 through the Sierras can get big storms. If you want a more leisurely and warmer drive, go south to I40 or even I10 to get to I5 eventually.

There will be good weather Saturday 2/20/16 and Sunday 2/21, but snow coming on Monday 2/22. This weekend sounds like a good time.

Of course, if you need HELP, I humbly suggest --->myself<--- to drive your car to you. :)

    Jacob :)

Make sure to check the weather near Reno / Tahoe!!! I picked up my SL600 in Los Gatos in early December, drove it home to SLC and got stuck in the snow 60 miles from Reno! Had to call out a tow truck and everything. The 5 hour drive to Reno ended up being 15! Never been so scared driving in my life.

I70 still not open yet. MAY open today or tomorrow. Check cotrip.org or call 877 315-7623.

We have mich pilot super sports ALL WEATHER RADIALS on our RS5. Works great wet or dry. Do your tires need to be replaced soon? If not you can ship and perhaps save a little $.

    Or

Consider going south thru Vegas. Spend the night and have some fun. Then perhaps drive up the Calfornia coast for a beautiful drive. More time but less risky and more fun.

One more caveat I just thought of......check wind forecasts too. Much of the route crosses deserts and you don't want your new ride sand blasted.
