I am an FCA member from Chicago. I will be driving out for the FCA meet in VA this year - mostly to visit my Daughter and Family in Baltimore.

I am planning a trip to New York City to visit a friend. The trip will be on the 6th of June right after Memorial Day leaving from Baltimore. Should I attempt to drive it in the Ferrari or just take the train? My friend lives on 102th street just west of Broadway.

    Thanks,

    Norbert

Unless your friend has secure underground parking where he lives in NYC I would strongly suggest you take the train !! Other then that it is usually a pain to drive in NYC unless you know what you are doing and where you are going.

I have done a map quest and plan to have it memorized before I would drive it. I would have parking arranged for sure before hand. The real question is the traffic. I would leave as early as necessary to beat the traffic in the morning. Just need some advise on how bad the traffic may be. Driving a 308. (Drove to Monterey in 2004 - the second car that nobody hears about that was with the '53 166 Vignale Spider.)

I don't think you can leave that early to beat traffic, the city is pretty jammed up from around 6am to probably 10 or so. If you want to beat traffic you'd probably have to leave at night and arrive at 3 or 4 am depending on where you're going.

Traffic during the workweek is very heavy. Weekends are much better but then it also depends on where in the City you are driving.I went into the City this Monday for The Letterman show and was convinced by many people not to drive in, so we took the train. I am glad I took the train, and yes I have driven in NYC traffic before. Bottom line – if you are familiar with NYC driving, drive frequently in NYC and know what you are doing then it is not a big deal. For someone like yourself I would suggest you take the train and save your self from the headache.

I used to drive home from ann arbor, MI all the time in college. Leave going east at like 10-12 am and you should be fine. Unless there is an accident, you wont have any trouble. Let me know if you need parking or anything.

Take the train..I presume you mean amtrak from DC or VA somewhere...gets in a Penn Station on 34th street you then go up a stairwll to the subway (1/9) and get out within a few blocks of 102 / broadway. Bring a small ipod or DVD player and enjoy the movies/music or a laptop...you will NOT enjoy F-car driving during the day in NYC....(3am spring eve...blast up madison/down park or fifth blasting throught the helmsly bldg over the viaduct under the tunnel -- top down w/tubi..that is another story altogether...unreal!!)

If you absolutely, positively, must have the F-car nearby, park it in Hoboken and take the PATH train into Manhattan. PM me for details.

However, I would definitely take the train if possible - is the Acela running again?

    Ron

PS - I remember when 102 & Bway was a very dodgy area. My GF, now wife, used to live nearby at 104 & Manhattan. We used to cut through the housing project to get to Bway because it was safer than walking around on 100th or 105th.

I've been stuck in Manhattan in a 308. It is NOT pleasant. You sit in traffic & watch Taxis blend their yellow paint with yours, Pedestrians all but walk over your car, and the temperature gauge keep rising & rising while you sweat profusely.

Emil's right. Memorial day weekend: Train.

    Wow...amazing coincidence....my sister had an apt on 104th b/w Broadway & Amsterdam...

I remember back in '98 how the area was borderline, but now it is much nicer...

Forget about traffic concerns....what about POTHOLES? That's the REAL concern any sports/exotic car driver should have....

Yeah! But you forgot the finish: off the viaduct and into the Park Avenue tunnel at 40th St.!

Norbert, the cost of 5 or 6 hours of pay parking could exceed your train ticket's price. Manhattan-Harlem is not a car-friendly place. Unless your car already needs the corners repainted or touched-up... WHY risk it?

Take the train! Saves wear & tear on your nerves not to mention your car.

that is the best...to whip around the helmsley bldg. ( such a "euro" feel for NYC) and then into the tunnel and here the exhaust bounce off the tunnel walls ( so Montecarlo) just awesome on a cool Spring night..seeing the crowds empty from Regines and the private clubs on Park Ave...witht he limo's lined up...so fresh! We can talk about the west side hyway ( Oh sorry Joe DiMaggio Hywy) whipping around the whole island ..

I did drive to New York from Baltimore in the 308. I accepted "Parikh1234's" offer to mark in his driveway West of the Hudson river and take the bus to 42nd street. A taxi from there.

A wonderful meeting with an old friend. Why I waited so long when he is so up in years now, I don't know. I should have made the trip a long time ago.

Thanks to everyone who offered assistance.
