trying to figure out the course of action here the drivers window goes down perfectly fine but as it goes up around the half way mark it gets stuck and I hear a clicking noise as if a gear is not engaging the mechanism to go up or the motor has a stripped gear or something. I need to hit the switch to stop the motor from clicking. I can pull the glass up but not all the way too much resistance.

Can anyone comment on this and steer me in the direction of repair, I have been looking for new motors and found a few online and then saw a thead that you can grind the rivets and grease the motor and screw the shell back together.

How does the motor engage the lift mechanism does anyone have a photo or details on this with the assembly taken apart. I found a photo of the lift assembly online. It looks like a PITA job as you need to remove the outside body panel and interior door panel and the full body metal assembly off the door to swap the parts out or repair unless there is an easier solution post below.

    Hi there,
I had a similar problem on my 96'GTB a decade ago. Unfortunately no pictures made. The symptoms were that the window was going up & down fine, but when fully up the window left a 1/2" gap on the rear but not at the front.

For troubleshooting, I disassembled the interior door panels (30min of work) only, then I could see that the rear flexible shaft was broken. I could install a new motor+shafts+slider from the inside, without touching the exterior panels.
However, for installing the sealing-foil back to the glas perfectly and probably for fine-tuning limit switches or the like, you will have to remove the exterior panels probably.

Anyway, since my car is only driven in dry weather, I did not bother taking the outer panels away.

So in your situation, I would as a first step only remove the interior panel and see what is actually damaged.

    Best regards

Not a 355, but here's a photo of the rear window mechanism, actually a modified mechanism too, from my 1988 3.2 Mondial. The gear engages a coil spring type assembly to move it along, in my case the the gear case had been replaced with a plastic one, I don't know. But here's a photo anyway of the inside.
This was my right rear window mechanism, my left rear window mechanism is clicking about 3/4 of the way down, so when I take it apart I'll probably be able to see why it's not engaging. The reason the right assembly quit working was that part of the assembly itself, the guide tubes for the coil spring had broken. I repaired them put everything back together and now it works fine.
See my thread on the repair here:
