A topic for discussion at the drivers' briefing in Turkey will be doping in Formula One, according to Swiss daily newspaper Blick.

The publication referred to an anonymous driver who claims that more rigorous testing could be carried out, despite the perception of Grand Prix racing as a 'clean' sport.

The last drugs transgression near the pinnacle of motorsport involved former Prost racer Tomas Enge, who was stripped of his F3000 title after testing for marijuana use.

But the unnamed driver source said substances such as 'EPO' are more likely to be doing the rounds.

The banned 'EPO', which stimulates the production of red blood cells and is commonly used in endurance sports, is a naturally occurring hormone that is therefore difficult to test for.

"I am in favour of tighter controls," the anonymous driver said.

I forgot that they did that to Tomas Enge for smoking some weed. Well, we know by the way they drive the race, it sure isn't FISI.

Let me be the first to say I DON'T CARE.

I started watching F1 when I got sick of this crap in pro cycling. Don't even start with it. I don't care if Alonso has a crack pipe in his helmet. I just want to see loud cars going really, really fast.

This might explain a certain former F1 driver's actions (and words) of late.

I dunno, other than maybe using something to unwind after a race , i can't see using anything during the season. I notice i don't drive my street car as well as i normally do just having a hangover. How you would try to drive F1 under the influence of anything is beyond me

Good lord.... who gives a crap?

Amazing that a title was stripped away because the dude smoked some weed. WHO CARES???? What business is it of anyone? Do these people think smoking weed is giving him a performance edge? REALLY???

As to the others supposed performance enhancing stuff.... well, do they propose stripping Juan Manuel Fangio of his 5 world championships? It was certainly no secret that during his day he had his famous little white pills. Some funky South American stimulant that he frequently took before a race. Of course nobody cared... why would they?

    Terry,

Not only that, but Niki Lauda wrote in his book that he used to smoke a bit of the Natural Herb when he was vacationing in IBIZIA.

    I care.
While I may not care if my coworker is stoned out of his mind in the cubicle next to mine. I would be very concerned if the guy next to me was driving 200+ MPH just inches from my car.
I few years ago I learned that one of the guys who used to race karts with us, used to smoke a joint just before every race. We managed to get him banned from our series. Of course we could not prove that he did it, but he was also a cheat and a very dirty driver, so we used that to get him out.
He said that the Mari-j helped him to "be focused and calm down before the race." That was the first time in the history that focused and pot are used in the same sentence. I thing his lack of judgment under the influence made him think that some aggressive moves were good idea.
    So yes, I care.

Stoned WHILE driving in a race???? Thats absurd! When I said I didnt care... I meant I didnt care if the driver got baked the night before or whatever. NOT that I didnt care if someone was stoned DURING a race!

Since pot can stay in your system for up to 30 days, a driver could fail a test yet weeks could have passed since he used weed.

I cannot imagine an F1 driver attempting to drive a race while high. They would suck. There is no way a driver can perform at that level while high. No way.

In Carrol Smith's book "Drive To Win" he states that some people were using "Slow Down The World" drugs during races. The was back several years ago and he said he never condoned it but that it probably did have the desired effect.

That sounds a lot like the inhalant that Speed Racer used so that he could handle the GRX, the "Fastest Car on Earth."

Don't the drivers know that the long term side effect of these drugs is that you become afraid of driving over 15mph? Geez! These race car drivers should definitely watch more cartoons rather than reading silly Drive to Win books. The dangers of "slow down the world" drugs have been known in the anime racer circles since the early 1970's.
