Does anyone know if there are any subtle differences between the engines / transfer / gearboxes of theses two models ---- or, are they identical?

I seem to recall that Ferrari used different tipo designations for the engines --- but, I'm not sure what the actual difference is in specifications. Are all the mounting points the same --- can you swap one for the other easily?

Also, I have heard that the gear sets (ratios) were slightly different for the two cars ---- any truth to that?

quite a few gear ratio differences between all the 3x8 models. the Mondial gearbox has an oil pump off the main lay shaft that the 3x8's do not. there are some differences in speedometer signal on the late and early models but otherwise they are interchangeable between the all the models that use the 3x8 engine

The only thing that comes immediately to mind is the hydraulic clutch of the Mondial. There is a little slave cylinder bolted to the frontside of the engine.
