Two lane back roads are not for driving fast. The wildlife (deer) will come out of nowhere and you are dead. Also cars will pull onto the road and wont see you coming around the corner. Two lane roads are fun for passing, speed limit+20mph is okay, any more and you are stupid. Darwinism will take care of this problem quick; these guys will just die off.

In my opinion, the interstate is the only place to safely drive fast if there is no traffic. If you can't see any cars and want to open it up, go for it. Want to go 160 down the interstate? let me know so i can join you.

But if you come down my 25mph street at 60mph, i'll hunt you.

I drive the speed of the freeway. I just came back from Las Vegas a few hours ago. Only the stupid drive faster than traffic. With a 70 mph limit, I do not go much over 80. Now if a Porsche tries to past me that is a different question.

    12 cylinders or walk

I try to go to the track once every 2-3 weeks just to get the speed rush out of me, but I must admit it is hard to drive a fast car slow. Brief spurts of speed are safest, easy to slow down when you see the man :)

excessive speeds only on the freeway. fastest i've gone is just a tad over 200kph in a honda. on the streets in town usually 10-20kph over the limit, maybe 30 if the road is completely empty.

On congested roads, I drive at what everyone else is doing. On roads with light traffic I'll drive the prevailing speed up to an additional 10-20mph. On empty roads, I'll push faster for brief periods (perhaps speeding between "clumps"). Suburban and town roads I'm pretty conservative.

If some wants to speed way beyond the limits, the only thing stopping him is the threat of getting caught and fined or perhaps a cow or deer on an otherwise empty road. But if he does screw up, the drivers or pedestrians around him had no say in the his choice to speed and they shouldn't have to pay the price for his overconfidence or running out of skill. That means the driver bears the burden of paying whatever price it takes to avoid involving another.

90% of drivers think they're above average, 40% of them are wrong - and the 10% who admitted they're bad are even worse than they think.

There's too many laws these days that penalize 'excessive speed'. Basically here if you're caught above 99 MPH you're screwed. Higher bonus fines, suspended licenses, they can even take the car if they can get a 'street racing' charge to stick. It's just not worth the pain.

I'll run about 10-15 MPH over the speed limit in good conditions

I'm a track worker. The track offers me run off and traps to slow the car down if I loose it. I drive harder on the track to push my limits knowing that my chances of injury are reduced (not eliminated). Also I'm in the car alone.

On the road I'm very selective about where I exceed the limit. Never around the suburbs where there are a lot of driveways or "T" intersections, and preferably divided dual lane roads.

Fortunately I'm a shift worker and can do my "Sunday" drive during the week. Less cops and if I wait until 10 everyone’s at school and work. If I'm returning by 2pm I can avoid the rat race when on the way home.

On my bike I've seen 165mph (zx10 one up) traded for an MV so I do less than now. In my car never seen more than 115 mph, as I'm usually with a passenger.

I'm not much of a top speed blaster anymore. I like the higher corner speeds than monstering the straights.

Here in rural (redneck) PA, the winding, twisty 2-lanes are great for enjoying a spirited drive without the need for excessive (>80mph) speeds. Because of deer, you have to be constantly diligent in watching the roads. On familiar open stretches where there are fields on either side, I am confident enough to push her to 120. I have yet to take Val to I-80 or the track, but plan to push that top speed up a bit [couln't go past 140 anyway].
BTW in the Fall, there is definitely no need to go fast because the towering trees on either sides of the road are in their glorious shades of Ferrari red and gold and you need to just cruise in order to enjoy them.:)

...then comes 6 months of WINTER!!!!!!! Arrrrghhh

Fast is a subjective evaluation: Seen the excerpt from "Robot Chicken" where the snail is wooping it up ... because he's flying ... on the back of a turtle?

The problem in this area is the transient population: This must be "Neverland", because the roads are full of "lost boys".

I drive at a conservative speed, with the full ability to stop short, because I know that the roads are full of people who aren't looking out the windows.

But that doesn't mean that others wouldn't say that I'm too fast.

But which are the "dangerous people": the ones that drive at (or maybe a hair over) the limit, or those who crawl along at 10 mph ... right through red lights, stop signs, etc.?

Speed doesn't kill. Inattention kills. Specifically; driving beyond your attention span and degree of control kills.

Granted, it's a tough call for a young driver to make -- without track experience to tell you what your capabilities are, and without enough street time to realize that others aren't paying attention, you're likely to get caught by surprise in a situation you can't handle.

But there are no perfect solutions. Even Kimi is out of his depth when the wheel and suspension suddenly falls off.

And there's a difference between "fast" and "quick". I used to play a little exercise on my commute when I was in the Boston area. A ricer or p-car would tear along on straights, and I'd be right behind him -- without ever going over the limit. These "speed freaks" would tear down the straights -- and then come to a dead stop to go around curves.

What bothered me most was that they would drop 20 MPH when another car was coming the other way. What, you can't keep it in your lane at that speed? Then it's too fast for you.

People would call my driving "fast". But I've been running a top level safe driver discount on my insurance for some time: So where it's results that count ...

But when some demon flys past me, I may be dubious about his abilities --- but if I don't see him hit something, I can't say he's wrong.

I know: It's unpopular, these days, to say that we have to wait for someone to actually commit a crime to call them criminal.

That used to be called "due process".

But I'm not going to insist that the other drivers limit themselves to what I can handle.
Nor am I going to live down to the declining standard of driving skills to avoid waking up the other drivers.

I don't mind people taking their time.

    I mind them taking mine.

    (Okay: I'm rambling -- it's been a long week.)

Fast.. it is all relative. In Italy, on a toll road (Gravellona Toce - Alessandria) I recorded 250 plus with my 328.
Today in the Philippines on a MAJOR road I recorder 115 on my Ford Expedition.
IMHO, it was much, much faster the Philipino drive. Or, at least, more stressing and demanding.

Drive very slow and careful anywhere it is reasonably possible a kid or anyone could pop out in the street OR the cops would notice.

Elsewhere, I adhere to the prima facie speed limit ;)

I prefer corner carving a deserted 'B' road to high speed blasts for the Sunday Drives . That said we have friends in the circle who are ' connected ' to the traffic cops and are able to get 'advance notice' on the setting up of any roadblocks or speedtraps on the stretch of highway that we're planning to exercise the car....( always done around 0600-0730 on Sundays, virtually nil traffic..). Highest speed ever was 265km/h (indicated) before I bottled out.

In Malaysia it is ILLEGAL to possess a radar warning device and if caught the penalty is quite serious.

    haha.

I do that all the time too. I follow them into the bends and then its time to
see what 'skills' are at their disposal. There have been times that i almost
run into their rears as they slow down so much for the corners ...

    Driving fast meant:
No speed limits ("reasonable and proper") in daylight hours on most except urban roads. (In Illinois, at least)
Many miles of open roads (2 lane, but well maintained) and low traffic density.
    No Radar!
The Fast drivers were driving Ford V-8s with drum brakes, skinny bies ply cotton cord tires, and unlike today when the kids seem to all drive new cars or trucks, we had to do with used cars we could afford. We would then routinely drive at top speed, which was 85 to 90 MPH, but with unknown mechanics, tires of doubtful condition, etc.
So I guess I drove "faster" than I do now.

    Cheers
    Warren

The speedlimit on Hwy 1 through Big Sur is 55 mph. You can have a LOT of fun without exceeding the legal limit.

Well said. A great many of these posts remind me of myself, not so many years ago......back when I was young and stupid. The cavalier attitude shown in some of these posts is certainly not doing much to engender a positive attitude for the marque or its owners. If you really need to go fast, do it on a closed circuit, or better yet, ante up for a seat in any number of racing series and have at it....although you had better be prepared to find out just how slow you really are.

Of course. The faster I get somewhere means more in fuel savings. Getting somewhere in 10 minutes doing 100 MPH as opposed to doing 65 MPH translates into a drive time savings of about 6.5 minutes at the slower speed. That's how I rationalize it anyway...

Yeah, I noticed that. In the canyons and river roads up in the beautiful north woods, there are sometimes miles and miles with no signs. If you miss one, or are going to fast to see it, it might be 10 miles before there is another friendly reminder.
