Driving stoned is black and white. Driving tired can also be dangerous. I would bet that more wrecks may be caused by drivers under the influence than tired (I may be wrong). Yes, an 8 slap min is good for those not carrying proper insurance. (Is it better to get hit by an uninsured motorist that has the minimum allowable insurance than by a driver without any insurance?...Considering that YOU have uninsured motorist coverage).

See, this is evidence of the wrong way our society looks at problems. You are just focused on whether it is a felony or not (smoking pot and driving is not a felony BTW). What if we were in a country where it was a felony to attend the church of our choice, would that make it right? Why put so much energy into a cause that makes up such a small percentage of accidents and fatalities. We could use that energy fighting the cause of 2/3rds of accidents that kill our friends and family. My best friend from college and our swim team captain died just months after we graduated from falling asleep at the wheel. Luckily his sister and our other friend in the car didn't die. Luckily no one innocent in another car died either.

Here are some various statistics I found on net...

Manpower Driving, the specialist driving division of Manpower, polled its drivers (Category C1 through to Category C+E) asking them what they thought the main cause for road accidents were.² The majority - almost two-thirds (62%) - of drivers believed that tiredness led to accidents on the road.

A quarter of drivers think that the effects of drugs or alcohol is the main cause of traffic accidents, and 19% believe the use of mobile phones is the main reason. Only 1 in 10 think that bad weather conditions are the main cause, and 4% consider the main reason to be vehicle failure.

    STATE TOTAL 102,226 4,760 4.7 798 138 17.3

In South Carolina only 4.7% of accidents and 17.3% of fatalities were caused by drugs or alcohol. They don't break it down, but I can guarantee the majority of those are alcohol related. Even most of the drug related accidents would be prescription drugs.

I'm still saying you shouldn't smoke pot and drive. However, it is my opinion that smoking pot effects your driving much less than alcohol, being tired, or talking on the cell phone. The statistics appear to support this too. Traffic accidents are one of the main causes of unnatural deaths and it scares me seeing the type of driving I do on a daily basis. What we need is education and logical decision making to correct the causes and not dumb black & white ignorance.

The March 2001 issue of Max Power contains an article on drugs and driving which contains a lot of good information on driving under the influence of drugs and the effects of doing so - they even had people driving on a test track after taking 4 different drugs (ecstasy, cocaine, marijuana, and alcohol) to SEE the effects each drug had on them while driving. This was done by performing tests of their driving skills before and after the drug taking.

If someone could find this and post the results it's some good reading. Cocaine was the only drug that made the guy drive better, everything else had negative effects.

its not about driving 'worse'.. heck if the laptimes dropped a few seconds but there were still no accidents the tests prove nothing imo

I still don't think it is a sensible thing to do. Not convinced by the arguements of social or moral standing. It is a question about judgement while driving. Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs while driving is the worst thing any driver can do. Ask anyone who has been unfortunate enough to have an collision with another car being driven by a person under the influence.

I know that my driving is better high than it is at the legal alcohol limit (which takes me more than 4 drinks in an hour according to the "sniffer" - and if I'm even close, I don't drive). So why should your opinion of weed use be so black-and-white?
Chemical influence in our lives is a very real thing, and if someone can prove to me that smoking makes you a worse driver, maybe I'll take that to heart. But honestly I think driving while angry, tired, depressed, excited, etc is worse than driving on marijuana. I observe no increased reaction time, loss of alertness, focus, or skill.

Second that. I am deeply concerned that some cretin might injure one of my kids while driving drunk or drugged. If this ever happens he will deeply regret it, even if it means for me going to jail.

Again, I ask, how about talking on a cell phone or someone with a suspended license or maybe someone just breaking the speed limit? Dead is dead.

Does the fact that there are similar or even worse misconducts serve as an apology for driving under the influence of drugs .... ?

drug, booze, cell phone, looking for your stuff on the backseat ... it's all the same BS that will eventually lead you into a ditch (note you might end up in one without this extra help).

IMO, it's not the attention that drugs take off you, it's the judgement. The decision you might have to make ..."swerve or brake" ... never easy to pick the right one.

Oh, and if you hit me while high or drunk, or just blatantly disrespecting others on the road, I will beat the living crap out of you.
