Please tell me about driving or parking our cars is the rain. Looking at the vent in the hood it looks like the water will run through the vent and on to things like the alternator and A/C compressor. While driving at highway speeds I imagine not much water runs into the engine compartment but while the car is parked all the water on the center part of the hood will all drain in the engine compartment. Has this caused any problems for anyone?

It's fine, I've not had any issues, a bit too much power for the snow. :)

No problems on the few times that I have been caught in big rainstorms. I do try to keep the hose away from directly going into the slots when I am washing the car. There is a deflector panel that keeps the water from falling directly on the alternators.

My car doesn't have a deflector shield. I don't know if that's because it's a 365 while yours is a 400 or if my deflector is missing. If possible could someone post some pictures of the deflector. If I had a picture it would probably be pretty easy to fab one up.

No worries. A shield is mounted on the underside of the hood louvers that keeps rain off the alts. when the car is sitting. While driving, the louvers purpose is to expell air/heat from radiator so rain typically isn't falling in.

Same here. Am I missing it too? Could someone take a decent picture of it? Then I will build one myself.

    thanks!

    2 pix right back atcha.

This from the 365GT4 2+2 body parts @ Eurospares, #3 is 'supposed' shield. Notice it isn't under the louvers like the 400 series, plus it appears that the louvers are more forward of the alternator location. Check w/hood closed.

Thanks for the pictures. I will check the alignment when I put the hood back on. I think I could make up a small aluminum plate mounted to the alternator to deflect the water if need be. I have the hood off because we, my wife and I, have been working on the A/C system. As of now it is up and working. When we get home I can do a full write up with pictures if anyone is interested.

My 400i lives in Pacific Northwest and drives just fine in the rain. The windshield wipers are not as fast as some of the newer cars and the TRX tires are long enough in the tooth that I'll replace them soon. They are a bit hard so it is easy to make the rear end chatter with the limited slip on tight corners. But the car drives well in the rain. I have not noticed any significant leaks or performance issues in the rain which is amazing for a car more than 30 years old.

Is that a thermostat mounted on top of the coolant outlet going to the rad?? That's the 1st time I've seen that.

John, it's the aluminum pipe that mounts to the top of the timing chest that I'm referring to. Bruce

#5 on the IPB pic that I included.

Now I see what you are talking about. I didn't realize that is not standard. I'll take a closer look tomorrow and see if I can find any clues about what its purpose is.

Whilst I have no problems driving when it's raining, water collects in the front 2 spark plug recesses if it rains hard whilst parked, despite having the original deflector panel in place; this water causes a horrendous misfire if not sorted before starting up. to cater for this eventuality - you get used toit in England - I carry a small wash leather (and prong to shove it into the recess) for soaking up the water before I start up.

    Regards, Ray.
