Really interesting. In 1968 I was flying back to Seattle from Philadelphia on an NWA 707-320. They encountered a huge storm front over the Rockies and had to fly so far south that I recognized Davis-Monthan. We were 2 hours late in getting to Seattle.

I guess it's a good thing they were not in the air that whole time. I just thought it was interesting that they flew that far out of the way instead of either waiting longer or just canceling the flight.

Looks like it has been a nightmare all day up and down the east coast. Reminds me of when my mother worked for Eastern - the stories she would tell of people complaining of cancellations or delays due to horrible thunderstorms - like Eastern Airlines controlled the weather.

Time to buy your own airplane. Wouldn't have to deal with this stuff.

If an A319 doesn't want to fly through that weather, I'm not particularly sure that I would want to attempt it in something smaller.

.... and now the rest of the story.

They boarded the plane at normal boarding time.

Then sat on the plane, on the tarmac, for more than 3 hours before taking off.

    That's insane.

East coast weather! Would driving have taken the same time? :)

We were once early coming in to SFO on a domestic from Minneapolis, and the pilot decided to show us Yosemite. He banked the 757 around for half an hour and made me quite sick! I would have preferred to just get in early. Yosemite is beautiful, though, and it was a nice experience despite getting nauseous.

You don't sit at the airport waiting. You go to lunch or hang out your house and watch a movie til the weather clears. Then drive to the airport and go.

Driving would have been faster on this trip.

Jason, I never understand your responses in these types of threads. You solution is always that the person flying commercial should buy their own plane and fly themselves.

That's ridiculous. Do you really believe that or are you just reminding the masses of your superior travel method?

Those "sightseeing" detours can be dangerous in the wrong place. In 1966 a BOAC 707 pilot tried to give his passengers a closer view of Mount Fuji in Japan. The aircraft was hit by an unseen mountain wave, suffered structural failure and crashed, killing all on board.
