As some of you may know, I had a "Dropped my Laptop" thread in Technology, and ended up getting a Mac ProBook.

Well, guess what... this morning while dressing, I dropped my Rolex...four feet and a marble floor, and the watch hitting on the edge of the crystal DO NOT mix...

    *sigh*

So, I'm wearing my 'back up", a Chronoswiss Lunar that I normally only wear for special occasions.

Oh, by the way, I was quoted the following, cost-wise, for info:

This is on a Rolex Model 17013 - Quartzjust

Full Service (it's been three years, so what the heck): USD$ 160.00

Mandatory replacement of Crown Tube: USD$ 70.00

    Crystal Replacement: USD$ 140.00

IF the motor is jammed because of glass shards and requires replacement: USD$ 490.00

    Potential total cost: $860.00

When can I expect to get the watch back: March 20th, 2010.

The joys of living in a wealthy country with only one authorized Rolex dealer who only has two trained Rolex technicians...

    Don't I know it...

    Jeez...

Thing is, it is my 'daily driver' ... and I love the styling of the watch, but heck, IIRC, I only paid something like $2K for the watch, then a few years later paid around $500 for a full service on it...

All I can say is, I'm glad Rolex doesn't use belts...

The guy told me the only reason was that they only have two techs, and it will just take that long.

So..... until then, I'm Chronoswissing it.

FedEx it to me and I'll take it to JR Dunn's in Lighthouse Point. Authorized service and it'll be done in a week.

Don't ship a Rolex to the states. Customs will seize it.

    Wish I could, Duane... but...

He's right... I've even been pulled aside at Customs, once in Atlanta and once in Dulles, and asked if I had 'proof of purchase' or could prove that it's not a fake...

When I pointed out it was a 1992 model, and the only battery-powered Rolex made by the company, and, oh by the way, "do you have proof of purchase on YOUR watch"?, they let me go... but not until after the stern look and the 'in the future' speech.

    Guess you're screwed, sorry I couldn't help!

For the record JR Dunn's serviced mine and made it look like new for $150.

    Mike,

A word of friendly advice. Definitely _do not_ put your car up on a lift.

    I think I see a pattern here.

What?! They do this to watches peope are wearing? Wow, that is terrible!!! I wonder just how many customs agents take "confiscated" watches home with them. What a disgusting thing for them to be allowed to do.

That is what I was thinking. Does customs open every single package that comes into the states?

Because of increased security, X-Ray is used in bulk...would they catch it? Who knows... with my luck... maybe.

I'm certain they don't, but I'm certain that they open a FAR higher percentage of packages coming from the Middle East than from elsewhere.

No, but if they do, they'll confiscate it immediately.

That quote to fix it is actually pretty good, especially if it doesn't end up needing a new motor.
