had a 2005 996 turbo cab and it was an awesome car though the techonology was a bit old considering that bodystyle came out in 1999. got rid of it and got the 360 i currently own. well.... the porsche 997 turbos have gone down from 140k to the very low 100's... so i decided to hit up champion porsche and test one out.... OHLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this car is insane... its fast as and an absolute pleasure to drive.. tight suspension and all the amenities.... will i buy it? probably not now though its tempting. and on a sidenote.. the GIAC tuning kit is $2500 and bumps HP from 480 to 560..... and does not void the warranty if champion does the work.. insanity! thought id share.
Hey, what can you say about the noise and drama compared to your modena? Suddenly does not look so great now, is it But you are right about the temptation, add a little on top of 6-7 years old 360 modena and buy a 1-2 years old, technologically superior Porsche TT, which is almost the ultimate P car.
What did you think about the clutch on the 997TT? I have a modded 997 S and test drove the 997TT recently - It was certainly fast as hell, but the clutch felt more like an on/off switch, which threw me off a bit. I felt like the clutch pick up in my car was much more controllable, so I've put my 997TT order on hold for the moment. I assume it's something most people get used to, but it just felt kinda weird to me...
996tt body style came out in 01, it is different than the 996 that came out in 99. + the dry sump motor in the turbos and GT series is fair superior to the throw away motors in the standard 996/997.
Also, there is a big hit to be had on buying the 997tt new, could be almost as much as a nice 01 or 02 Turbo can be had for. Assuming some of these 997tts are going close to some of the asking prices. If performance is an issue, the 996tt can be modified on the cheap, relatively speaking, and dominate most road going performace cars.
hmmmm... I had a string of Porsches, they may be solid, reliable, well built and have all the mod cons, they cannot be compared to an Italian exotic. The experience of owning an fcar or lambo is totally different, from the drive, to the sound, to the attention. After owning a few Porsches unless its a classic (pre '97) or a 997 GT2, I wouldn't trade in an Italian exotic against a 997 S or 997 TT. Also, here in London Porsches are way to common, I like something different (saying that there are A LOT of exotics in London especially during the summer).
Been there, done that. Sold my 997 that I bought new. Terrific car. Snap your head back grinnin' acceleration from 2nd to 3rd. No maintance issues. No soul either. Just my $.02 :harry
Had first 997 Turbo Coupe delivered in my area. Picked it up, brought it home, parked next to the 575 for less than a month and got rid of it for a 430. No heart, no soul, drives like a cadillac! But on the other hand, my wife loves her 997 Turbo Cab! That being said took delivery of my RS in January and I love this car! Heart, soul, noise, brakes, a great addition to the team. While the Turbo may be a reliable daily driver, there are lots of other options out there that will get the blood pumping and cause you to spring out of bed in the morning, unfortunately the Turbo isn't it.
ditto with the no soul statements... I'll take a slower, less reliable ferrari ANY DAY.. there is MUCH more to a sportscar than acceleration.
like someone else said here, its not hard to beat a ferrari, but matching its heart and soul cannot be done by anything else. bryan, for driving thru mizner park, or up and down military trail, the 997 should be / would be a great light to light boulevard cruiser...however...we literally have the most BORING roads in palm beach county to drive cars in. and the 997 is so FLAT sounding, in comparison to your 360. unless you come up here to moroso motorsports park, both cars are impossible to use where we live im afraid.
Parked beside my Challenge Stradale is a recent addition, a 996 Ruf R Turbo with 550HP and 575ft/lbs of torque. Roso Corsa with stripe vs. Guards Red with Carbon Fibre spoiler and mirrors. Couldn't be happier; very different cars; both got soul. The Ruf is faster, will beat a 997TT as well as a 430 on both the strait and track. The Ruf gets my vote day in and out. But the CS gives me the night sweats I just can't do without.
Yes compared to a modena when it comes to exhaust noise, and good drama which is best with your experience with both. I saw one today in red and also a F430 and it almost looks as good as the F430 and I know it's faster and can get it for cheaper than a F430. The interior is a bit lacking but I can overlook that because while there isn't much exotic looking interior with the tan leather and the like, it is more technically equipped than the F430 (navi screen, tach and speedo pretty much). The only thing I don't know about the car is it's exhausts, and if the stock are not that loud what after market options are good?
turbo p-cars always lack in the exhaust category. dont forget, you need those exhaust gasses and back pressure in order to run those two turbos. naturally aspirated 4.3 liters of ferrari machining has always sang a prettier note compared to 997/996. you want excellent dependability and uber-fast, buy a p-car. they are a hardy daily driver. you want to show someone you actually have a pair, buy a f-car.
If you drive in the track and have time to enjoy the sound of your exhaust then you're driving slow. If you can't find the "soul" in a Porsche then you're driving too slow. If you need a Ferrari to feel the "soul" of the car then you're like the guys who need viagra. For me just about any sports car is got "soul", you just need to connect with it.
