Disclaimer: I own a 2014 458 Spider I am sitting at a Starbucks in Abu Dhabi this evening enjoying a quiet moment away from the wife and my two rambunctious boys (7 & 9yrs old). I'm sipping on my espresso and a Lambo Huracan pulls up to the front of the Starbucks. Two gentlemen step out and walk into the Starbucks. They fetch their coffees and sit down, engaged in conversation. I finish my espresso and get up to leave and I recall the Huracan/650S/458 debate on F-Chat. Hmmm, I wonder if the gentleman would allow me a peek at the cabin of his car. And so I step up to him (he's Emirati and wearing the local traditional white Kandura). I ask him a few questions regarding the Huracan and he was very polite, offering me a seat next to him. He offered that his dad owns a 458 and I volunteer that I own one as well. I inquired about the differences between both cars since he's obviously driven his dad's 458. To my greatest shock, he tossed his car keys at me. He says. "go and tell me the difference when you come back to the store. Take it out to the main road and stretch it". With that he laughed and returned to his companion and coffee. And so I gingerly step into the car. First of all, the cockpit layout is entirely different from a 458 and more "space-age". Having watched a few U-Tube clips, I recall it is keyless start to I place the key in my pouch and punch the start button. A nice growl salutes my ear drums. I take a few moments to familiarize myself with the cockpit, than tap the right paddle into 1st. I guide my way carefully out of the parking lot and hit a nice stretch with no speed cameras. As the light went green, I punched the throttle and the thing took off fast almost jumping in fact - faster that my 458 in my opinion. But the cabin was so muted I had to strain to hear the engine and turned off the stereo altogether. The ride also was bloody supple, didn't feel the road as much as I do in my 458. In a shell, this car reminds me very much of my recent test drive of the 488 GTB (which I documented on the forum a couple weeks ago). Both very fast and agile and might I add the Huracan felt feather light. It was so jumpy lightweight that a slight tap on the throttle and it was flying. The 458 on the other hand requires you to lean into the pedal a bit to get the car to go. When you step on the gas from a standing stop, you can almost feel the weight of the 458 breaking inertia vs the Huracan which just flies off. In all, I thought it was a very nice car and felt incredible agile. The shifting was almost unnoticeable (no kidding). Even when I shifted at very high revs, you could hardly feel the gear shift, almost too smooth compared to the 458. It just felt very tame. I turned into the Starbucks parking lot and the gentleman came outside to receive me. Smiling he asked, "what do you think?". Of course, in response to his gesture and kindness, I said "incredible". But never for a second did I think I would trade my 458 spider for a Huracan. I keep arriving at the recurring conclusion that I lucked into a late production 458 Spider and it would take a mountain to replace it (in its peer range that is). Neither the 488 GTB nor the Huracan creates the visceral drama and that feeling inside your guts and veins that the 458 does. Its really hard to put it in words since I'm neither an expert driver nor an out-and-out gear head. There just that feeling the 458 gives you, that "je ne sai qua", that you don't get in these other two cars I've test driven back to back. It is not anywhere as refined as the two cars I compared to but its almost that roughness that sinks into your body while going thru the gears that I love. Maybe someone on this forum can help me put it in words ...... Sart
Ok, so between the 488 and Huracan, despite the Ferrari brand and the look (subjective), if you don't have a 458 and now thinking to buy only between Huracan and 488, which one would you get?
Based on styling and looks, I'd opt for the F-Car (488). The Lamborghini trademark bat-mobile styling I still find too aggressive and contemporary for my taste (also for the image I strive to portray - I work in high finance). Based on driving, I'd still opt for the 488. The Huracan just felt far too civilized to my senses. The Huracan just didn't feel as planted as either the 458 or 488. Many have compared it to the Audi R8, a very civilized contemporary of the 458/488. I can't draw any comparison b/w the Lambo and the R8 as I have yet to drive an R8. Sart
Thanks sartoria. Nice write up. I drove the huracan before picking up my 458 and it just didn't excite me hence why I have a 458 now. On a side note, only in Abu Dhabi would some one hand over the keys to there supercar to a complete stranger and say have a go.
Plus the Huracan is an Audi motor...not a bespoke Lambo motor like the Aventador. Not knocking the Audi motor...it's a great power plant...just not a Lambo power plant.
I spent an entire day driving the Aventador and Huracan HARD at Leguna Seca. I'm the Ferrari owner mentioned in this article. Lamborghini Accademia at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca We literally shredded the tires off the Huracan in the Auto-X . You can read the full experience as it is well detailed in the article. This is how the story ended. We both left the track and bought new Ferraris the next weekend. I could be more specific but I think that should sum it up well.
I drove the Huracan and own a 458. Was pleasantly surprised, the Huracan was a bit more comfortable than the 458. Engine sounds great with exceptional handling as its a 4 wheel drive. Dual clutch trans seemed as good as the Ferraris. Liked it more than thought I would. Downside is rear visibility, and attracting too much attention, even more than 458, and lack of storage / frunk space. That said, I didn't second guess owning a Ferrari.
Own a 2015 458 spider delivered 6 months ago. I also have really liked the Huracan for all the reasons you mention and thought about it before I finally landed firmly on the 458. The 458 is a special car. That said, I drove the Huracan again at Monterrey and liked it so much, I just bought it and will take delivery next week. Yes, I'm keeping the 458 too.
Did you drive the car in corsa mode?? If you did I'm surprised with some of your comments . I own both and I think both have pros and cons. Hard to say which I like better ..
If I have to choose between Huracan or 488 GTB, I'll go for Huracan. Ferrari brand is one level above Lambo, so between 458 Italia and Huracan, it's very easy to pick, NA VS NA and Ferrari VS Lambo. But 488 GTB....turbocharged is for family cars that carry many people and doing stop-n-go all the way. For super cars, we need something special, something not regulated like a diesel truck because it's not priced like a diesel truck. It's like if Patek Philippe makes a quartz battery watch, I rather buy Rolex automatic watch.
Spieler, You couldn't just resist the jab eh? Nice pun. My wife is French and my kids speak french 80% of the time and 11 years on, I'm still struggling .. LOL Sart
Looks great in the darker color! Nobody has commented on the Huracan's seats here. Does your car have the optional seats? Some people have found the standard seats uncomfortable. The optional seats were a late option for North America.
One could argue that the V10 is more Lambo than Audi. The VW group didn't know much about multicylinder engines before acquiring Lambo.
people on this board will ignore this post because you dare to criticize 488 and there was already a lot of criticism about this car
Interesting! Thank you for sharing this. IMHO seats are the most important connection you have with a car...
Have standard seats and they feel fine. Have Daytona seats in the 458. Huracan rides really comfortably by comparison although I believe all my test drives were in sport mode while I always drive my 458 in race mode with comfort suspension on.
Tell that to the people who own an f40. The comment that turbo is for family cars is just ludicrous. The list goes on of high performance turbo cars that are special like you say.
i had 2013 458 spider and tested the Huracan too it had a nice sound but much softer feel on the road, it did feel more powerful but also fatter-wider-heavier downshifts were followed by pops and gurgles of the exhaust note but after a while they seemed manufactured rear view visibility was a joke... this is the biggest complaint i will consider a huracan spyder as i originally came from a 2008 gallardo spyder and i did love the car despite all the creaks and groans and plastic audi bits
The joke is that people think supercars should be as practical as an everyday car but without sacrificing performance or looks. Of course the visibility is lousy, the Huracan is putting design and performance ahead of rear visibility. Truthfully, with the camera it's fine. None of the supercars I've owned have had great rear visibility. So what , be careful backing up and then look ahead. What's the big deal? Name any modern day super car and I'll give you negatives that are associated with it , that's the trade off ...
Howydo- agree. I have an SlS currently and people ask if I fit inside ok. I'm 6'4". My response is who cares. I didn't buy the car for the comfort. . With regards to the Huracan, I agree, rear visibility sucks but who cares. The cockpit is so cozy and comfortable. It's a great experience. I personally preferred the test drive in the Huracan over the 458. (Don't kill me guys- just telling the truth)
Well the limits. Ferrari dealer had a Countach. Most uncomfortable car i have ever sat in. A torture chamber. The peddles are offset. Never could find a comfortable driving position. Rear visibilty is a joke. No camera back then. I will not own a car that hurts my back. BMW i8 doors make it so i have to crawl in and crawl out. As a geezer i could not own this car. Leave the Countach and i8 for you young whippersnappers. Your values and pain tolerence changes from 20 to 70.
