The FIA's Charlie Whiting announced some new rules and clarifications today, and chief among them was that DRS will now only be allowed in the race in the appropriate DRS zone, for the 2013 season.

I am in total agreement with this move - in fact, I think I suggested it here last year! ;) It's intention was as a race overtaking aid, and it never made sense to allow it's use all over the track for practice and qualifying. What resulted was DRS systems optimized more for the qualifying usage than for the race benefit, and strange situations like Abu Dhabi where Red Bull changed Vettel's car setup because by starting from the back instead of the front of the field, his DRS needed to be optimized for overtaking instead of qualifying.

Not surprised by this at all. It never made sense to be able to use it anywhere you wanted in quali or practice, but not the race.

You mean teams were using it in away to achieve maximum benefit rather than the way the FIA intended?? I'm shocked! Utterly shocked!
