I just received the DVD titled "Neil Peart - Anatomy of a Drum Solo", and it is amazing! It is quite technical, and as a non-drummer myself, I didn't get a lot of the drumming terminology he used. There is a lot of drumming, and I mean a LOT! You have to really appreciate a master at his craft to enjoy it as a non-drummer. I always felt he was the best in the world, and I certainly still believe that.

Anyways, check it out..............I bought it on Amazon.com.

Thanks for the tip Dan, I've been drumming for 30 years and consider Neil Peart the Mozart of drummers. The guy does things that are SOOO complex, it blows my mind.

Saw Rush in ''81 & we hightailed it for the best seats in the house - off to the side - where we could watch the real show. And we did.

YIPES! Wow, talk about... anyway, What about Gadd, Copland, Bruford, Appice, and too many others to mention like Kruppa, Rich, DeJohnette...

And yes, i am a LONGTIME Rush fan and have plenty of items from the 80's, met Neil, wife and daughter (too bad about wife/daughter's death) etc. Hung out with Bruford and others as well.

Sorry, geeeze guy, calm the F down about Peart vs. Weckl. Ok, he IS a great drummer, but each drummer has their style and we all have our preferences.

Then there is Bozzio and his melodic style... Or how about Cobham, or...

Well, about five years ago Neil's wife died from ???, and then, like months later his daughter got in an accident or some such. i might have the details wrong, but basically Neil lost his entire family in less than a year. He was emotionally devistated and this is why Rush did not tour for a few years now make any albums.

I was an aquaintance of Neil P, very nice guy. Very good drummer, also Ian Pace, Keith Moon, Tommy Aldrige, Corky Lang were some of the best! BOC used to do a 3 man drum solo very cool. I am retired now!

I had a good run of Rush concerts. I saw every tour from Farewell to Kings to Counterparts. Awesome concerts.

Check out Mike Portnoy and don't forget about Carl Palmer. Palmer's influence is ALL OVER Peart's early stuff!

PS..... Ian Paice is great too but he stole Palmers drum solo! :)

And this is the band I "managed" so to speak before I became the drummer after the other guy lost his mind. I love the drums but can't play anything else at all. Which is really annoying because all the musicians I know or play with can at least play a little of everything. Oh well. Dave, Neil, Stu, and so many others are amazing. BTW - Bruce Wellington that is one of the coolest things to hang with Dave, I have a couple (or did) have a couple of his videos that were a great help.

    Thought I would share.

    Thanks,

    Dave

PS - The band no longer exists so if you click on any links they go to domain sponsers. Again, happy New Year all.

Say a guy in his late 30's wanted to just pickup and learn how to play around. (Having never played an instrument before (other then the cd)) How difficult would it be to f'around? I was thinking of getting something like:

Roland TD-6S V-Tour Electronic Drum Set

Can you play this w/o making to any noise in the house wearing headphones?

What is the best way to learn? Hire a kid / instructor or is there a good SW program you could recommend?

Too bad the future isn't now and we could just 'load the program' ala Neo :D

Here's more votes for Weckl,Gadd,Pace,Moon,Palmer and the fella from Sabbath Bill Ward always loved his rhythm.

And how bout John Bonham he was no slouch.

I saw Dream Theater 5 times and they are all so good it get's annoying if you play anything musical. Unreal band, unreal drummer .

    LETSJET ...

I have played with triggers on regular drum sets and when the drums have mics on them for say 100+ people in attendance you hear what the triggers are set for through the PA speakers and monitors. Not very quiet. The kit you mentioned is great but be careful because you may run into extra costs like a power amp, and a controller to change the drum sounds in your headphones from "concert hall" to "bar room" to "stadium" ect ect. The last time I played a digital kit was a year ago or more and when I wanted to purchase it they laid a sh*t ton of other things I "needed for it to work correctly".

All in all digi kits are pretty sweet because you don't have to tune them and the warm and cold doesn't effect them sound wise. You also don't have to worry about breaking a cymbal because they are plastic (or they used to be) if this is the kit i'm thinking of.

Sorry for the long winded reply - If you buy the right digi kit and the needed proper equip all anyone in your house will hear is a couple of taps here and there. All the cool drum sounds will be heard only by you in your HF's.
