This is kind of a XX vs. XX thread, though involving two relatively different products.

If you were presented with the choice of these two alternatives, which would you choose?

    Alternative 1
Selling Kit Canon Digital Rebel XTi/EOS 400D
Buying Canon EOS 5D Mk. II (allegedly released within a few months) ($3.300 MSRP (based on 5D “Mk. I” MRSP))
    Lens upgrades and accessories ($1.000 – $2.000)
    Total $4.300 – $5.300.

    Alternative 2
Keeping Kit Canon Digital Rebel XTi/EOS 400D
Buying Sony XDCAM PMW EX1 (Listed at around $5.900)
    http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&rls=DVFC,DVFC:1970--2,DVFC:da&q=Sony+XDCAM+PMW+EX1&um=1&ie=UTF-8

Which do you think would deliver a bigger “thrill”? Would A2 be a $1.250 worth of extra “thrill”, taken into account what is achievable with a camcorder? What would you choose? Would you go for one of categories (dSLR and HD camcorder) just with another setup?

3 videos shot on the Sony XDCAM PMW EX1, just to illustrate the great image quality of this camera:

I hope this is going to be interesting.

    Sincerely,

HD video is cool, but I'd have to ask myself the following questions:

How often will you watch it?
    (rarely, if ever)
How easy is it to share?
(I'm not sure, but given the file size and the associated processing requirements, I don't assume it's a snap)

Personally, I'd go for the DSLR. I'm not sure how accurate the 5D mkII rumors are, but they will probably bastardize the 1Ds mkII sensor into something ASAP, so maybe.

That may be an underestimate. What lenses are you using now and what would you be interested in? I'm assuming at least a wide-angle to make complete use of that massive sensor.

    Marc,

    Thanks for your reply.

I think you are quite correct on your assessment of the camcorder. It will be quite difficult handling such vast amount of data, and when it comes down to it, such video is not something I would watch on a daily basis, as I do with my photos. Photos certainly brings a greater daily joy, whereas video probably would only be watched on special occasions.

I think you might be right there, also. I would certainly got for a wide-angle. This one is suposibly magic: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=RetrieveSku&IC=CA163528L2EF&Q=&O=
This one would put be back $1.400 though, which doesn't leave me with much if I would want say a 100-400mm lens.

    Chris,

Would that be another alleged name for the 5D Mk. II, or are you on about that Nikon poop? :D

Heh, nothing hurts like the truth, ha? :D

Seriously though, I've never really looked at Nikon in depth, so I don't really know what Nikon has to offer compared to Canon. The D3 sure looks outstanding, though a lot more expensive than the 5D.
Have you ever compared the two makes? What made you go Nikon?

It certainly is a fantastic lens. I've used it a few times (a friend of mine has one). I have its baby brother (17-40 f/4L), and I use probably 99% of the time. My other lenses are the 24-105 f/4L and the 70-300 DO IS, and I'm thinking about getting the 50mm f/1.4 (the 1.2L is just to expensive right now).

haha... There HAVE been rumors of an EOS 3D to sit between the 5D and 1D, but yah, he's talking about the glorious Nikon. I love my Canon cameras and I love Canon's glass, but the D300 and the D3 are phenomenal. Were I just starting out today, it would be a tough decision. Nikon has an awesome lens in its 18-200. We'll likely never see something with that much zoom (11X) from a Canon SLR lens.

Agreed 100%. Plus, you can't hang a video on the wall (...unless you have plasmas all throughout your house, I guess :) ). I get to see this (8X12, double matted gold frame - sounds odd, but trust me, it works) every time I walk into my house:

Alternative 2, I say because all you need is just get some good glass and your pictures will come out very professional.
On the other hand, There are new canon products coming out in January on the 24th, there are rumors of a canon rebel XTX 450D coming out, but it will only have minor upgrades, If it comes out. hmmm.... i guess Alternative 1 or 2 will work, you must decide not me :D

Wow, that's an outstanding setup. Sure covers any need - saw some of your pictures in the "Daily random pictures you have taken..." thread, and they sure are very beautiful taken!
I'm pretty sure I would have to go for the f/2.8 one, as I love low-light shots.

I was quite astonished by the price-difference bewteen the 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.2L! Just crazy!
I just read some reviews on the Nikon's, and it doesn't exactly make my decision any more easy. I agree on the glass, which might make me go Canon, anyway.
Well, a beautiful photo deserves the best, doesn't it? ;)
Just beautiful picture - what a way to be welcomed home :)

It will come out, but like you say, it won't likely have much going for it over the 400D other than maybe the rumored video functionality.

Yah. I'd like to do low-light stuff (I absolutely suck at indoor photography), but don't have fast enough glass and the RebelXT gets really noisy at high ISO. I rarely have it set to anything other than 100. The 40D (which I keep saying I'll get but keep putting off) is much better at high ISO.

haha... yah, you pay a lot for that letter L :p

Personally, I'd choose the video camera. I don't find I need much more than an advanced point and shoot (G7-G9).

    XTs, no video.

    14-bit A/D, 12MP, live view, 9-point AF.

Also, it uses SD rather than CF.
