Timo Scheider wrapped up the DTM title in style by winning the final race of the year at Hockenheim.

The Audi driver snatched the lead from third on the grid at the start and then opened up a gap that he would never lose to title rival Paul di Resta during the pit stops.

"It is an unbelievable feeling right now, I was fighting the tears on the last lap," said Scheider. "Maybe I will have to stand out the back without anyone around me before I start believing it. It has been a perfect day."

Di Resta came home second, just three seconds adrift, but the Mercedes driver was never quite close enough to attack his German rival at any point.

After letting the fast-starting Scheider through into the lead into Turn 1, Mattias Ekstrom briefly held up di Resta on the opening lap.

The Swede ran wide into Turns 2 and 3 to keep the Mercedes at bay, to the point that Jamie Green passed them both into the hairpin. Ekstrom was later eventually hit with a three-second stop-go penalty.

Di Resta closed in during the first stint, but Scheider extended the gap during the pit stops and maintained it for the remainder of the race.

"First of all we have to congratulate Timo, he's had a great season," said Di Resta. "He did a great job today. I'm a bit disappointed with Mattias Ekstrom, but I'm happy with second. It's been a strong season in my first year with the top team at Mercedes."

Di Resta crossed the line with a queue of cars behind him, as Jamie Green and Bruno Spengler caught him during the final laps, while Tom Kristensen closed up to them on the final lap in fifth place.

Behind them, Bernd Schneider took sixth place in his final DTM

Looks like Ralf Schumacher is not doing well in this series.

Can anyone confirm, are Mathias Lauda and Markus Winkelhock the sons of the drivers with those last names?

    Yes.

I don't watch DTM. It's a strange series, only 2 models on the grid, and although they're magnificent pieces of engineering, Mercedes and Audi do their very best to convince the viewer that they're just race versions of their road cars, despite the fact that they don't share a single part... I'd rather like to see production cars being tuned up and sent to the track, like they do in basically every other touring car series in the world. Better keep that special from-the-scratch-engineering for LeMans etc...

btw, as I said, I don't follow the series, but IIRC, every F1 driver who switched to DTM struggled very hard.

I agree. i havent really watched it this year, perhaps next year again...

Its an incredible exciting series though, I've been to a few races and the atmosphere is amazing.

Hakinnen, alesi, Ralf Schumacher, albers....all have driven in F1 but never really have been 'up there'. Albers was a champion for christ sakes, yet now he's 'competing' with RSC. pathetic.

Ever since i first watched the series i've been a fan of mattias extrom. shame he didnt take it this year.

    Oh well.

To answer the question, yes Mathias Lauda and Markus Winkelhock are descendents
of their famous racing fathers Niki Lauda and the late Manfred Winkelhock (nephew of
Le Mans winner Jo Winkelhock) respectively.

Many in Europe point to touring car series such as DTM and FIA World Touring Cars as the
most competitive racing around featuring the real top drivers. Often, we will see larger
crowds at DTM races than F-1 events where the two very different series share venues
such as Hockenheimring or Nurburgring for example and, to be sure, the drivers are among
the highest salaried in the businesss.

Unfortunately, Euopean-based touring car series tend to be overlooked in the U.S. which
is a pity. It seems the U.S. channel SpeedTV ignores these series during their seasons
but do show them on tape delay during December, weekdays around noon time but by this
time the season is long over and we already know the results!

It is a bit ironic that the poster of this thread writes with great authority about
yesterday's DTM finale (okay, it's cut & pasted directly from the Autosport website,
is that allowed here? I'm new here so no judgement passed) but dosent seem to
know much else about the DTM series.
