I'm not very well versed in the Boxer engined Ferraris, and was surprised to see a two alternators in an image of an engine out of a 512bbi. Does it take two of them to keep up with the 12 cylinders firing, or are they just designed smaller to fit in the space, so two are required?
I imagine the change to the fuel injection increased the current draw so a second alternator was added. why not change to one larger alternator? Don't know....
It's more related to the introduction of CIS injection on the 12 cyl cars -- which adds an extra ~25A current requirement over a carb configuration (and giant single alternators not really being commonplace at the time). Both the BB and the 400 went from single alternators to two alternators when they became BBi and 400i (and adding that extra complexity was a bit of a boo-boo). The TR went to the big single alternator, but even that isn't an easy thing to do -- as their having to redesign the drive belt system proved The real long-term fix was going to EFI injection -- which didn't need such powerful fuel pumps -- so less current needed.
