My ‘86 TR was equipped by the selling dealer with this Alpine 7368 deck. It was the top of the Alpine range at the time, and is a great piece of kit. Unfortunately, it needs to be serviced to address failing capacitors. Does anyone has instructions for removing a dual shaft stereo like this from a TR? I’m hoping it can be done without pulling the whole dash.

Pull the knobs off. Might be nuts holding the radio shafts onto the faceplate.

Uh, yeah. That’s the easy part. Unlike modern DIN radios that come out the front of the dash, however, dual shaft radios come out the back. They are typically secured to the face of the dash by nuts on the shafts, and also by a strap on the rear that attaches to the firewall.

So I guess I need to be a little more explicit in my question. How can I access the area behind the stereo? Do I need to pull the entire dash, or can I get in there some other way? Some cars I’ve had in the past had access from underneath, but of course we have cabin air vents and gauges underneath the radio area.

I seriously doubt they installed a radio that was hard to install.

The dash vents come right out.

Look at post #4 in that thread you posted. I used a feeler gauge to unlock mine.

Was it a dual shaft or a DIN?

The dash came from the factory with a DIN mount hole cut in it. They have mounted it in a way using that DIN mount hole.

Have you bothered to take off the face plate to see how it is mounted? Or are you just running around proclaiming the dash needs to be removed?

    ^ This.

Pull the knobs off each side. They pull straight off by hand. Take the face plate off after unscrewing the little nuts on each stalk and you will see the whole front of the unit in a single DIN rectangular opening.
