Yeah that is horrible news. The crash happened about 15 minutes away from my house. The father who helped with the restoration also was a fire fighter and had saved more than a few people lives over the years. . Here is the memorial funds information if anyone is interested.

Two memorial funds have been created for the Patton family. The International Association of Firefighters, Local 401, is accepting donations at 525 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti 48197.

Donations also can be mailed to the Ypsilanti Area Federal Credit Union, 424 S. Mansfield St., Ypsilanti 48197.

That guy must have been flying to roll that car. Was it a Volvo SUV or sedan that hit them?

Either way I say throw the book at the guy.

I am so saddened to read and hear of such a thing.. we all know it happens, just dont want to hear it this way, or see that 2 children will grow up without parents now.

Is there any info on why the kid ran the stop sign ?? Drinking ?? speeding (of course as it seems)

My thoughts and prayers go out to them

Who knows, might not have taken much speed. Regardless, this is a sad sad, tragic, event. :(

Granted it is a very sad and tragic event, I was just saying that a Duesenberg is a very, very, very heavy car with a fairly wide and long wheel base. My little physics calculator nestled somewhere in my grey matter say's it'd take a lot of force to work against that kind of inertia.

    sad story for all involved.
"His father told us yesterday that the car was very rare, but not as rare as his son,"
Cars can be repaired but even in something built like a tank like a Duesenburg you can die because some other idiot isn't paying attention :(

Some more info as well as a slide show showing the accident scene as well as a family pic here http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/4794575/detail.html

(pics there are safe for all eyes)

many of the links I read on this were saying really pressing how the car had no seatbelts and how old cars should be retrofitted, but I personally don't see how they would have helped this time. I would think that in a big open car the belts would just hold you in place to have the car roll on top of you. Belts would have probably saved most in the car as long as it didn't roll though. I've had a lot of convertibles and without a sturdy rollbar it seems like with or without a belt if it rolls you're dead.

it all sucks but accidents happen.. i feel horrible for the two children left over from the accident.. but i'm sure that guy is having a hell of a time right now.. i'm sure he is feeling like **** and knows he just killed 3 people.. 3 of the most important people to those 2 kids.. i dont see why we should punish him any more.. we can all agree that he probably wont ever do that again and luckily none of us killed 3 and injured 2 when we did anything stupid driving.. he was the one it happened to. he didn't have intentions, it was an accident.. and his punishment is enough..
