Ive had a fuel smell in the garage.
Closed the cap at a 1/4 turn seems to have improved. Messed with it again yesterday and it will keep turning to the right (clockwise). This morning fuel smell is back.

Is there a way I should be closing this cap?

Close it until it’s tight. Put a little umph into it if you have to.

That cap should stop after 1/4 turn so either the inner part is spinning inside the cap or the stops on neck are bent etc

Be sure to check your Fuel pumps. If they have not been replaced it may be the source of your fuel "smell". Common problem and also a serious one in respect to fire hazard.

Check your fuel pumps ASAP. You are describing classic fuel pump failure smell. They crack at the top letting fuel drip out. The fuel drips down on to the exhaust and sets the car on fire. The circle part on top with the X in it. See if there is gas puddling in there. If so, stop driving it immediately.

Adding this point too. If your fuel pump is all white like the ring around mine, and not almond like the one in the picture, you have the original pumps that were prone to failure.

FYI OP had the fuel pumps changed a few days ago - he is now still smelling gas and was wondering if the cap is the issue

Ahh. Good to know. Maybe it’s some fuel that got splashed or dripped during the change? I guess that’s the best case scenario. Worst case is they didn’t connect something when reinstalling. I would pull the side engine covers just to be 100%. Unless he already did that.

I misread your initial post and thought you had a 360 - different setup.

I have never had an issue with the gas cap on my F430. I did have the gasoline smell which turned out to be the fuel pump leaking issue.
