I think I may have some clue, but just wanted to check to see what I am missing.

From what I gather, you have to have a good relationship with the dealer/salesrep as they don't sell to just anyone. Further, it helps (or is almost necessary) to have purchased a new Ferrari before (this would be a chicken and the egg paradox though wouldn't it?). Also, your credibility with the dealer has to be good (hence the good relationship) as they don't want (or shouldn't want) you to flip it - this based on the market for new Ferraris (at least 430s) is substantially higher than MSRP.

So my real question is: assuming all of this, plus any other insight you could provide, how would a newbie like me, who lives in SW Ohio (Dayton/Cincinnati) where there are no dealership (Columbus, OH I think is the closest) go about buying a new 430 in, say, a 18 - 36 month time frame.

    Thanks

    Rob

ps I am a Porsche guy, but have never ordered a new one - but don't think it would be much of a problem to order pretty much any of their models (maybe I am wrong).

Shouldnt be a problem...just wait till you are ready, go down to the dealer, and probably you can figure on getting it for about 20k off MSRP!

You are missing the purchase history!

You'll most likely not get to order one.

Best to look for one that is being turned, and that will be at a premium.

    it's simple

either go buy a lightly used car from any dealer/private seller etc and pay markup but get it right away

or start building relationship with dealer by buying used cars from them (most likely different car from what you want ) until they are willing to put you on list to order a car

in some places especially later in the model run like now you might find new cars at dealer lots available to buy at some markup over msrp

In 36 months there will be no more F430s except for used ones and the last new F430s to enter the US will be around September 2008.
If money is not an issue at the moment and you are willing to pay say $20k-35k above MSRP, I am sure you will be able to get one pretty fast. You could even find a used 2006 F430 with just a couple of thousand miles on the clock.

Because of the extremely limited allocation of new cars given to dealerships they naturally want to take care of their best customers first. The question is, "How do I become a best customer of a dealer". They answer is either be a very high profile individual (e.g. Michael Dell) or have purchased a number of pre owned Ferraris from the dealership. In my case I purchased 4 cars before I was put on the dealer's new car purchase list at a high enough level that I was assured a car within 1-2 year of its launch. Once you are a best customer you are then afforded the opportunity to put a $10,000 deposit down on a car you haven't even seen in some cases and wait 1-3 years to order and receive it. Seldom will waiving money at the dealer move you up in line because they know it could cause on of their best customers to bolt.

Thanks for the replies. Apparently I should have searched a little better and I was missing out on the finer points of new Ferrari ownership.

    Thanks Again

Dont let that put you off there are plenty of great cars with only a few miles on them they will get you exposed to the ownership experience you actually might get a better priced car into the bargain, dont let the new purchase policy put you off.

I agree with this. You would need to buy some used ferrari's from them to get the relationship started.
