    Driving in the rain
I wonder how many people know about this ~ A 36 year old female had an
accident several weeks ago and totaled her car. A resident of Kilgore ,
Texas , she was traveling between Gladewater & Kilgore. It was raining,
though not excessively, when her car suddenly began to hydro-plane and
literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but very
    stunned at the sudden occurrence!

When she explained to the highway patrolman what had happened, he told her
something that every driver should know - NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH
YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. She thought she was being cautious by setting the
cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain.

But the highway patrolman told her that if the cruise control is on when
your car begins to hydro-plane and your tires lose contact with the
pavement, your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you
    take off like an airplane.

She told the patrolman that was exactly what had occurred.

The patrolman said this warning should be listed, on the driver's seat
sun-visor - NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY,
along with the airbag warning. We tell our teenagers to set the cruise
control and drive a safe speed - but we don't tell them to use the cruise
control only when the pavement is dry.

The only person the accident victim found, who knew this (besides the
patrolman), was a man who had a similar accident, totaled his car and
    sustained severe injuries.
NOTE: Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow
you to set the cruise control when the windshield wipers are on.
If you send this to 15 people and only one of them doesn't know about
this, then it was all worth it. You might have saved a life.

Can't figure out who the most stupid is - sender of the email, the driver, or the cop (if any of this is true).

Seems like there is plenty of stupid to go all around.

BTW, the new-age enthusiast lady who forwarded this to me was driving a Ford Explorer the last time I saw her.

Well, I don't use cruise control even on dry days, kind of like to control my own car to car distance, etc.

However, this "causes your car to accelerate more quickly when your wheels leave the ground" and the "takes off like an airplane" part were just a little much for me.

    +1

Also +1. But, as noted on Snopes, the "physics" of what can happen (albeit unlikely) makes it valid - Not sure "scare tactics" is the best way to get the word out to "mom & pop" in their Caddie' though....

Well, you have to understand that my friend Cindy is an inveterate chain mail sender and I have seen her run out of gas TWICE while riding with her.

Is she blonde? :D [My G/F is also Cindy (blonde) and we ran out the other night - In her friggin' Prius!.......]

On the email forwarding, especially the ever popular "beware this killer virus" stuff I've learnt to check Snopes first, and very often respond with the link - I *love" Snopes!

    Cheers,

Wtf? When the wheels begin to slip, they can't take more than minimal forces. That's why you easily spin (-> no more side forces), and that's why you CAN'T accellerate any more!! Who wrote that BS? If he found a way to keep or even raise longitudinal forces at full slip, there's some money in for him in the car industry ;)

Edit: And btw, the Cruise Control aims to keep the wheel rpm constant -> constant speed. Beside the physical effects mentioned above, no cruise control would accellerate the car in case of slippage, it'd just keep the wheelspin constant...

Redhead. Here's another Cindy story: I took her to our local Half Price Books & Magazines - she heads straight for new age philosophy section, while I am in science. She finds a book on Nicolai Tesla.

When she hauls it back over to show me, I take a look and in just a moment see that it is Teslas real writings, with patent illustrations and so on. Has nothing to do with new age philosophy. She just wants it because they had a picture of a young Tesla on the cover and she was in love with it. So, I just buy it for her anyway.

About a month later, she has me over for Thanksgiving day...she can't cook so went out, hot tubbed, and lay around in front of the fire. She says "you know, James - I think I want you to have that book on Tesla - I just can't seem to understand it at all!"

Friggin' difficult to accelerate to a lower rate of speed..... :D

    And, "rate of speed". WTF?

    :D

Neil, you seem unaware of the fact that some cars come with wings.

Clearly, her vehicle was so equipped.

    Never use CC.

I have never met a CC mechanism that my right foot could not beat in attainable MPG.

    Waste of engineering to me.

Not so - CC can be quite useful in a motorhome; for example - how else are you going to keep moving when you want to go back and fix a sandwich?

And if you go to sleep without it, at least there is a chance you would reduce the pressure on your right foot.

My email alert has come alive - I think it is my daily message from Miss Cindy...hold the phone...
