You ever notice after a race and before the podium, the top 3 are in the green room throwing on their P1/P2/P3 hats and drinking some water.... then there's always some guy that has their watches at the ready.

If I just got done with a race, I'd first be grabbing for a cold beer, one of the grid girls, my cell phone, or even my wallet....... but why do they all need their damn watches right away???? You can't see them well enough so I'm doubting it's some sponsorship reason.

    Just something I've noticed that I don't get! :)

They are sponsored by the watch manufacturer - so for example Felipe Massa is sponsored by Richard Mille. The drivers don't (I wouldn't think - although some pics suggest otherwise) wear a watch when driving - it adds weight, could cause damage in an accident, and overall serves no purpose when driving. So, when they get out of the car, someone gives them the watch to wear so that the driver is seen wearing it in all the pictures and TV interviews.

Some of those watch deals ain't bad! Check out the price of a Richard Mille watch - Felipe gets one AND he gets $$ on top!

The watches are sponsored just like the brand of Champagne is. Everything in F1-- and pro racing in general -- is about "show me the money".

If the Dairy association didn't pay the Indy 500, they would have tossed out the milk bottle tradition long ago for a Pepsi or Gatoraide or.... Red Bull.

    This.

That spanish chap, Nadal from tennis, gets sponsored as well by RM. He wore a new watch the other day at the french tennis thing which only weighs 80 grams (how they got it that light I don't know, it was pretty big!) and allegedly cost around half a million...Not a bad deal!

Yet for whatever reason they still don't slap a sponsor on the post-race drink.

I think the highly oversized watches of today can look a little silly---especially on dainty wrists.  And gaudy even on more man-sized wrists.

The interesting thing about watches--gathered of 35 years of observing business relations and meetings:

The people who wear expensive watches end up late for everything while the people who don't even wear a watch are prompt.

Therefore, the watch says absolutely nothing about what kind of person you are, except your ability to waste money on bling.

As someone once said "A watch says a lot about a person, namely how much money he has".

+1 above 55mm is Flav-O-Flav territory. Years ago, wearing a big pager was considered a wealthy look. 10 years from now, we'll all be laughing at those big ugly watches.
