Anybody try/enjoy and or hate durian? They are available in the grocery store here and I was curious enough to buy one to try out. The odor is pleasant though a little overwhelming in the car and I had to wrap it up in a couple of plastic bags. I put it in the fridge for now since I can't eat it right away but I'm not even sure if it needs to be refridgerated.

For those who are unfamiliar..... it's very spikey and the size of a large honeydew melon or small watermelon.

I love it! Well yes it's quite a pungent smell in a lift or hot enclosed room. The best for me is the "red" meat which is so sweet it tastes a little bitter, kind of like pure chocolate. I'm surprised they ship it there, these fruits are best when ripe & dropped from the tree naturally so they must be consumed ASAP but many owners pluck them these days.

Choosing a good durian is quite a skill & so is opening it :) don't think I'll ever master it.

    Definitely refrigerated.

I LOVE durian. It's an acquired taste, but once you're hooked, it's as addictive as meth.

My parents love durian. When they cut it up, the kitchen smells like an active volcano.

It's apparently really good for you, though.

We'd see it at the supermarket in Hawaii, but I was warned against it by friends...

The Vietnamese lady of our house, Mai, got me to try this for the first time about 15 years ago. She and I both like it, but both of her kids and most of her sisters just cannot stand it. We both thought it was hilarious that the weird food guy Zimmern on Travel Channel cannot even stand to swallow it, and this is the guy who eats all kind of worms, bugs, brain parts, bats, etc.!!!

BTW, I saw on food channel the claim that all American Durian fruits have been frozen, partly for shipment but also to kill the bacteria.

You eat the yellow inside - it is kind of a creamy custard-like consistency. This is a very expensive luxury food because you get so little edible fruit by weight, in comparison to the heavy and inedible outer hull.

    Mark,

In China, Durian is a natural Viagra,,, it is consumed on the spring night of, "Lantern Festival." And ensures “Fruitful” Coupling. (pun intended) The women will feed this to their man. Ha ha ha,,, did any of you experience a more lasting (aaahhhhmmmm),,,,,,,,,,,,,, erection that evening?

To lighten the smell, it is best to freeze the fruit, then crack it open. It has a creamy garlic taste, high in caffeine, and vitamin C.

I had Durian during a trip to Penang Malaysia. The locals love it however upon a small sample I soon realized that this "fruit" tastes exactly like raw onions. If that is not bad enough, the outright smell of Durian from 20 feet away is awful enough to make you want to vomit instantly. It must be an acquired taste because the only smell I can compare this fruit to is raw sewage. Dont care if it is triple strength Cialis, there is no way I could ever eat it again.

Yeah, I paid around $35 for mine but figured it was worth it to try at least once. The grocery stores here in Qatar have an excellent selection of fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meat and the prices are pretty reasonable. I wish I had brought by camera because there were a bunch of other random odds fruits and stuff that I had never seen in the US. They also sell whole lamb carcasses in the meat department, not exactly sure what you do, I guess roast it, but it comes with the head and everything.

I sure hope not, I'm already too horny........ That's good to know about freezing, it's gonna be another couple days before I can crack it open and give it a try. I have it in the fridge for now.

Maybe you tried one of the other varieties? It does emit a strong smell but it's not unpleasant in my opinion though it could get to be overwhelming in a closed room without ventilation. Doesn't smell at all like sewage and I have been some places without normal sewers.....

Gonna try and take some pics of this thing tomorrow and post em' up. Thanks for all the responses!
