    Hey Guys,

My wife's SUV has an after-market Panasonic DVD player. At first it was great and no problems....but slowly over time it started refusing to play certain DVD's, particularly ones that were burned by my brother so my kids could watch shows he recorded. Now even the store-bought DVD's are having problems too!

Yes...I've THOROUGHLY cleaned and even resurfaced some of thsese DVD's, but they continue not to play.....the screen display will display the message "can not play this type of disc" or "disc error"...

A couple of times the kids have stuck more then one DVD in there and I've had to use tweezers to extract the discs...not sure if this effected it.

Is this a laser problem or something simple...the repair may cost upwards of $250 as guesstimated. Ya think it's worth repairing of time to replace and not waste time? Is there an easy fix I can do? Any idea why this message may come up?

    Thanks!

Can you see the pickup through the slot? You may want to try cleaning the player before taking it in. I've used (a LITTLE) watered-down windex on a cotton swab (cotton isn't the best thing to use, but go easy and you'll be fine).

Try to get a lens cleaner kit. Sounds like the laser is dirty.

Just saying that burned DVDs don't play well, and now some store bought don't play really makes it look like a laser issue.

Burned DVDs are much harder for the laser to read, then silver/store bought DVDs.

Excellent advice.....the guy at the store also thought it could be a dirty laser pick-up (but wanted to send it in for service to the tune of $250)...

I can't see the laser pick-up, but I can send a couple hundred pounds of compressed air into the system (via air compressor & needle injector) and see if that doesn't help. After that a long swab with some rubbing alcohol.

I wouldn't do that; you could easily damage the transport mechanisms and your compressed air likely has traces of water and oil in it as well. Get a small can of "spray air" from a computer store and try that instead.
