    Thanks Dave,
I will be looking into this next year after (hopefully) I rebuild the carbs. I think the engine has some potential with a bit more tweeking.

Sorry I missed this event...I got off a brutal work schedule and I was so miserably tired that I had no place being behind the wheel of anything this fine day.

DJ, I look forward to going to the next event so we can compare our #'s from two US '78 308's. By then I hope to have the air-pump and the nozzles out, etc. I wish I would have gone though so I could have had before/after sheets for the smog/no-smog set ups. Well, I'll do a before dyno anyway...I'd like to know the difference! I need to get the ss-stock and find a turning shop to get some nozzle plugs made! PeterB.

    Hey fellow F-Chatters,

How does the Capistro Exhaust on Tim's 360 sound?

I ask because I plan on owning a 355 Spider by
next spring, and I've been reading up on the subject
and have some sound bytes stored on my PC that
I listen to often. Just gathering opinions. Do you
like it as well as the Tubi? I rented a Spider in
Las Vegas in August 02 that had stock exhaust
which sounded real good at higher revs. Tubi
or Capistro might be to loud depending on cat
config.. so on, for the Spider (opinions?).

I live in Wenatchee (Sunny most of the time), but
when the weather is nice there's just no place like
Seattle/Puget Sound area. We go over to your side
of the mountains 1-2 times per month. My wife's
sister lives in Maple Valley and my oldest Daughter
is a Freshman at UW. ( next one in 18 months…Ouch!)

I've met with Robby (a few times), and Mike (once),
at FoS about taking the plunge (NEW), almost put a d/p
on a 360 in Sept. 03. (I may regret it later b/c their not
taking anymore d/p for now and it would likely have
    been the 360 replacement 3-4 yrs).But a 355 Spider is
what I've yearn for since I read about it in the Sept. 94
issue of Sports Car Intl., and they've gotten really
reasonable over the last year and will likely depreciate
a little more by the time I jump.

Hope to join your driving group when I'm properly equipped?

    Grazie

    Chuck Hankins

Sorry you couldn't make it Peter,
There will be many more opportunities for fun, that is, if we can get your head 'out of the clouds'.:)

Could you get a set of exhaust manifold plugs turned for me at the same time you get yours done? I'm sure a few others might want a set also. Should bring the price down that way.

    Hi Chuck,
I really liked the sound of the Capristo on Tim's 360. Not as loud and 'in your face' as a Tubi but had really great sound. It could be heard for quite a distance.

I am sure everyone would be pleased to welcome you and yours as a member. Ownership is not required to join. We have a member in Maple Valley too!

    Chuck,
Agree with DJ, join the Ferrari Club now, better to learn more about the cars (good and bad) before you buy, rather than after. Lot's of 355 owners, so you can query them for information. We also have several guys that are very knowledgable about all the various models, and they can be a useful resource as well.

You can drive whatever you own to our gatherings...

A big thanks to Gary for putting the NW Dyno day together. That was the best $75 I've ever spent! Running through the gears on my 2004 360 Modena F1 to redline was simply awesome.

    Some dyno data of interest:
Car: 2004 360 Modena, 1000 miles, F1, low cost premium gas, ASR off, AC on (yea, yea, I know, just forgot), Capristo exhaust

I ran a total of 4 4th gear hp runs, and a 5th run through the gears (2-6).

    Runs 1 and 2: sport mode *on*, 4th gear: 328.5hp, 236.8 ft-lbs
    Runs 3 and 4: sport mode *off*, 4th gear: 333.0hp, 237.7 ft-lbs
Run 5: sport mode on, 2-6 gears to redline (wow!)

The graphs for runs 1 & 2 overlaid the same, as did 3 & 4. The operator was amazed that each pair were so close.

Graph 1: Max hp run showing hp and torque (run 4, non sport mode).

Graph 2: Sport mode (run 2) vs non sport mode (run 4) hp and air/fuel ratio. Notice that *non* sport mode netted 4.5 *more* hp than sport mode!!?? I graphed the air/fuel to show what the ECU was up to. Notice that sport mode, run 2, ran much leaner between 3400 rpm and 5400 rpm, then richer up to redline. Notice also that sport mode allowed the engine to rev higher before hitting the rev limiter (or maybe I just let off earlier on run 4?). Note: The display program has a known bug in the air/fuel axis numbers (the scale isn't right). So, only look at the air/fuel curves themselves, and not try to get numbers from the axis.

Graph 3: Run 5 (sport mode): Running through the gears (2-6)! I also overlaid run 4 to see how close they were. Now the screwy thing is that the hp of run 5 in sport mode is now the same as the (high) hp of non-sport mode run 4. Maybe I ran run 5 in non-sport mode after all??

Graph 4: Run 5 again but with time along the horizontal axis instead of speed. This gives a flavor of how fast the F1 shifted. Looking at the shift times, I still can't tell if sport mode was on or off.

Anyway, hope this was interesting to you! - Tim

Hey Tim, what gas was it you were running. Will and I were standing behind your car when you ran it, and it gave off a distinctly ammonia smell about mid-range through each run. I didn't notice that odor with any of the other cars, and we wondered if it was the catalysts or the gas that did this.

Beats me. I get it at 1 of 2 stations. This tank was probably the cheap Arco premium stuff. Maybe the smell is some additive they use for winter? - Tim

    DJ, Kuzi and Dave,

Thanks for the Invitations! I've been a Ferrari Fan since
I saw and heard one just outside the Seattle Center on
our way to see Alice Cooper. 1972, I was 12 years old!
    I've monitored F-Chat since August 02 after I rented a
F355 Spider while on a family vacation in Las Vegas.
After reading the aforementioned article (SCI-Sept.94)
I had to try one out!!
The best 1K I've every spent!!!! (Kids agree - Wife doesn't!)
    ($750.00 for 24 hours + extra miles). I've been a REAL
Fan since. After a year of monitoring F-Chat and enjoying
    the posts/responses I joined in November 03. I've absorbed
as much Information as I can get my hands on.. I've copied/
pasted, book marked, cataloged and saved, I'm getting ready
for the Final exam's Baby...Yeah!!. But I'm NO Expert and I
won't be shy to ask either, believe me…..
Of course, there are other Models I'm Interested in, but a
355 Spider WILL be my first. I'm not worried about buying
out of State as long as I follow all the guidelines the F-Chat
members have pointed out. I'll buy it Cash and allow 15-20K
    for "Issues".

I'll sign up soon and look forward to meeting you all IN person.

Great numbers, Tim. I thought sport mode was strictly a suspension mode, nothing to do with the motor. Am I mistaken? If I'm right, I wonder if the softer settings of sport mode "off" allowed the car to sit better on the rollers, and put the power down more efficiently.

Don't know. The manual states that sport mode stiffens the suspension and makes the shifts faster, both of which happen. The roller theory doesn't explain the definite air/fuel ratio differences that I posted. Those would seem to somewhat explain the power differences between the modes. thomas_b would probably know the definitive answer - Tim

if you are not in sport mode the car will auto-shift at redline into the next higher gear

    I'm on a family vacation during this time. They wouldn't swap Europe for the track. I just don't understand them... ;-}

My 360 has never auto shifted outside of auto mode. I've hit the rev limiter a number of times in each mode (including on dyno day) and it's never shifted on its own. Did they change the s/w for '04?

Interesting - not sure what I do - can't remember with the Modena (but see manual text attached) but the CS upshifts - happened now two times - on the dyno in normal mode and on the track when I instead of ASR off switched race mode off :-( and the car changed gear in a corner ....
