55 RWHP!! I'm surprised it could even move the rollers. I'm supposed to have 50-60 crank hp. Hasnt been running well on American gas, I figured I would get around 35-40 RWHP. So I put some 100 octane in to see if it would run better and get the mileage I'm supposed to.. boy what a difference! Only supposed to make about 55 to the crank. 3 cyl 599cc turbo..

Good news is the car runs great. And its ready for a bigger turbo, injectors, and plumbing. (110RWHP target). Bad news is.. I need about 95 octane fuel (EU equiv).

After waiting (what, 8 years?) for a USA release, I won't be buying one. They pissed me off waiting so long.

I still like em tho! Saw a red one from Canada the other day.

Once you get in one, you will forget the wait. Dont be mad at smart, be mad at the DOT. This is not an 08. Its an 02. The new ones will look quite a bit different, and have an NA motor vs turbo.

That's about 1/2 the hp as my motorcycle, but then again, my m/c has almost 2x the displacement :).

In my town, Santa Barbara, a little car like this might make sense unless you venture out of town. LA, well, you might be OK until a SUV makes you a hood ornament. Why, oh why, would increasing HP matter. I assume your joking. Nice car for around town but please, please be careful!

I am not joking, because the car itself is a joke.. I will increase power to 110. Not only more fun but safe. The car is very safe for what it is. I imagine any other car hitting an SUV or truck head on wouldnt fare very well regardless. The Smart usually spins (converts is kinetic energy much slower) while other cars stop. Wouldnt recommend it for anyone as an only car. But for my 2 mile commute to work or around town, its great.

60mph head on into a wall - cabin still fully intact.

Mr.Rodney Drew, owner of F.A.I in Costa Mesa,Ca. and Myself designed and engineered the U.S. EPA required and OBDII compliant Fuel tank leak detection system that is now on all 45 state legal Smartcars sold by Zap,Inc.The system must be able to detect a 20 thousands diameter leak in the fuel storage system and trip a check engine light and also send the correct fault code to any brand test scanner. It must run a self-test routine upon every startup. We did this work on behalf of GNK conversions in Santa Ana.The car came with OBDII from Europe but minus required US systems. It was a great experience and would take too long to describe here.I developed a great affection and respect for the little car. I have driven most exotic supercars including 427 Cobras and I kid you not, The only car that I have ever driven that got more looks and reaction from other drivers was the Lamborgini Countach. Its 699cc turbo 3 cyl engine hauled both my buddy and me up the grapevine at 75mph no sweat.a really cool car,bar none. As mentioned, the current Smarts are 45 state cars. Had to pull some strings for mine. It is legally registered.. (Mine is an 02 from Germany). The 08 Smarts will be 80% different design.

Think you can get a blower on that car or will it tip over? I still like the Smart Car but would be afraid to commute my 80+ miles a day.
