I just bid on a set of Ferrari seat covers, car cover and bag, etc. on E-bay.

I bid with 1 minute 30 seconds left. I bid $150.00 over the current bid to ensure I was going to get it.

This e-bay bidder sclaedetails.com outbid me with 1.5 seconds on the clock left in the auction and he outbid me by $2.11 . He never put in a bid until after 2 seconds were left on the clock.

    W T F !!!!!!

I call the guy who one the auction. He doesn't own a Ferrari (funny I bought a cover from him 2 years ago and sent it back) and he now wants to sell me the cover, seats covers and bag (minus the steering cover) for the same price I would have one the auctin for !!!!!

Is there a software program out there I don't know about ????

    Anyone have light on this?

They're called "sniper" programs. Ebay doesn't allow them, but people still use them.

There are programs but I tend to just bid last.

I wouldn't buy from this guy. There will be others. Also, is he going to put it on Ebay? Else, you could be scammed.

Also, he could have bid $200 more then you and it wouldn't have made a diff.. It's only going to go up what ever it takes to beat the last guy. (you)

Its really cheap, usually 25 cents for little stuff, max is $5 for big stuff like cars etc, at least last time I looked.

They only bill you when you have accrued a dollar or two, so sometimes you'll get billed for something 6 months before if you are not active, kinda funny.

EDIT: I see they now charge 10 bucks for thousand dollar or more wins.

I don't think that is true at all. I get stuff on ebay all the time and have never used a service.

I do tend to bid in the last minute if I'll be near a computer. Bidding at the last minute doesn't give the other bidder a chance to think about it and decide to bid more.

When I do bid, it is always the maximum that I am willing to pay for the Item. If I get it for less, I'm happy. If I get out bid, well then I'm happy again because at least I didn't get suckered into paying more than the item was worth like the winner did.

Ebay is like any auction, you need to decide what you are willing to pay and bid it.....or you will lose a lot of auctions.

You are right. I used to wait around and manually snipe the bid (for the max I was comfortable with, just as you say) but for just a few cents or a dollar you can just set it, and go do something, like BS on F Chat!

Whether you snipe manually ( as you do) or using a service (as I do), I think we agree it prevents the bidding wars that hurt the ultimate buyer!

I don't use any programs, lately I just type in what I'm willing to pay and that's it. If I really want something, I'll put in a high number.

The only way to keep your sanity and your check book intact is to bid on a budget...

But why not do it in the last second so that some one does not bid it up so you either end up paying more, or loose?

I'm too cheap to let some one drive my proxy up needlessly.

    I BS on f-chat in a separate window while I'm waiting :)

I like the excitement of winning I guess.

If I won't be near a computer I just put the bid in and be on my way. Although it might be worht thinking about a service I guess.

The other thing, and it sounds like lawwdog may have been a victim of this, is I never pick even numbers to bid. Everybody seems to think in round numbers and that's what they bid. I always bid a dollar or 2 and change over a round number and I've won several auctions because of it.

Because most of the stuff I bid on ends in the middle of the night China time. I may not get much sleep, but I do like it when I get it...

I like the sniper idea but the idea of giving up my ebay password I don't like.

Ditto. I'm in the UK for the next 3.5 weeks BUT thanks to a snipe program, i'm bidding on something in 5 days. AND, i'm bidding on it with 7 seconds left. Its a shame because its not really an auction but its the only way to win something now. So many people are using them.

I've wondered this myself and know about the sniper bidding. I suspect that the sellers set up a shill sniper bid account to ensure that their stuff gets bid to a level they are comfortable with. Anyone else hear about this?

Can anyone recommend a good sniper program?

The best way to use a shill bider is to get them in a bit early enough so that people caught in the moment of the auction still have time to bid.

Having a shill bid with 2 seconds left and steal it from a real paying bidder doesn't seem like it would make sense.

I never said they were bidding in the last minute, though I do see that too. If you check locations and previous purchases of bidders it gets easier to spot.

    By the way:

misspelled...the guy who won the auction via sniper is www.scaledetails.com

Maybe he will make a mini version of the Ferrari car cover, bag, and seat covers??????????????????????????

he has sold over 3400 + items. I talked to him tonight and when I asked how did he get his bid in so fast he responded "I have a very quick Ferrari stop watch..I have good timing." all the while chuckling and quick to change the subject.

Right, but if you had a shill bid sniper program you'd be able to run the bids up to a preset higher level. Otherwise if some eager beaver has set a high bid amount then the final price may not be close to that. Make sense?

BTW, ebay does not allow shill bidding but how would they really know?

They could tell the easy ones by the same IP addresses. But, I don't think they police it much because they want their fees.
