Just a little note, Anybody purchasing items on ebay please be very carefull. I just got burnt $ 1700.00 on a non ferrari related item. The Peaple selling the product were very professional and it is very easy to fall victim to such scams. The reason I am posting it here is because I do own a 246gt and am on the site reading all the time and have read about peaple looking at ferrari parts on ebay. I am not saying that e bay is not a safe place to buy stuff I am just saying " buyer beware ".

This is just my personal experience.

Right, but what was the scam exactly? I know that no one likes to admit they've been had, but how did this particular rip off go down? If this is a typical thing then it'll give us somethig specific to look out for.

Here's an idea btw for more expensive or questionable items. Use an escrow service like: http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/escrow.html OK, there is no secret to that but what you do is after the auction you tell the seller that you'd feel more comfortable using ebay's or whoevers escrow. And, what you do is tell them that you'll split the cost with them or no deal. So for example on a $1,500 item that's $67 total. So for $33.50 you're guaranteed to get your item. What are they going to do give you negative feedback for wanting to use an escrow and asking them to split it? I don't see how you'd get ripped off doing this................

    MY Ebay scam explanation.
I bid on an expensive auto espresso coffee maker and did not win. My bid was almost 1700 and I lost by 50 dollars. A couple of days later I got a Second Chance to buy offer which looked authentic from ebay! This is something normal when the winner changes his mind or doesn't pay or the seller has more than one to sell. I've been told NOW after the fact that this scam usually happens on larger ticket item with a few bidders. Anyway, I replied to the offer and they sent an email asking for my user ID and shipping info, they said they had to submit to ebay to confirm so I could be covered by ebay's protection policy. The ebay email came, which looked completely authentic with links to different parts of ebay. It stated that basically I would be covered if I paid via Western Union because in the UK Paypal does not cover the full amount and that the seller had a holding account where the equivalent funds would not be released for thirty days. Also if the seller didn't give me a tracking number within three days and I could contact ebay for the refund if they did not ship. THIS STUFF LOOKS REAL! The machine was supposed to be coming from Florida where his WIFE was! The confirmation also gave his name and address in the UK and they picked up the money with a passport in that name! Fane Gantoi! Once the money was picked up all email contact stopped and after the 3 days I got worried and checked his user ID on ebay and it was cancelled. Funny thing is on the 3rd day I received another second chance offer from yet another name for the same machine! I think there must be a few of them in on these scams because I sent an email via contact member to the original guy and the reply was from a third person! Now I had to inform the internet fraud agency, ebay and the local police! Basically the police said I can kiss the money goodbye because they do not have the manpower to investigate each scam. They said it would have to happen to a few people in my area for them to look into it deeper. Please take my advice.....if you find something you like on ebay check the seller out first and make sure they are reputable and I would never again accept a second chance offer! It's too risky. ALWAYS pay with Paypal because you're paying ebay not the seller and if it turns out to be a scam you deal with the credit card company and ebay.
That's enough for now ....if you have questions please let me know.

OK thanks. Seems like when you have: 1) purchase outside of an ebay auction; 2) out of country seller; 3) them requesting a payment through Western Union; it's dicey. Sorry you had to experience this.

In cases like this a general rule for me is NEVER to respond to any mail with direct links to the Ebay site. 10 out of 10 times they direct you to an Ebay-look-alike site instead of the real one!

It happened to me quite a few times that very respectable Italian sellers of Ferrari memorabilia and literature approached me with an identical story but
using normal mails without any links, and it always turned out to be genuine.... Never had a problem with them.

MIAMI - The Internet auction house eBay Inc. canceled bids for half of a 10-
year-old grilled cheese sandwich that its owner said bore the image of the
    Virgin Mary.

Diana Duyser, of Hollywood, put the sandwich up for sale last week, drawing
bids as high as $22,000 before eBay pulled the item Sunday night. The page was
viewed almost 100,000 times before being taken down.
