True. I sold mine because, I forget why, suddenly E-type prices just shot up, so I took advantage. The '64 had the curved front and rear double bumper so was particularly popular and mine was in mint fully resotored with original OEM parts condition inside and out. It was not a show car, but you could not find a more flawless driver's car. Incidentally, I bought my '64 for $17k in 1983, so made quiet a profit on it. When I was looking, many were selling for under $10k. The only investment I put into it was $4k to restore the interior. That is how much I sold my 1959 XK150 for (which needed full exterior and interior restoration, but the engine worked), and the proceeds went into the E-type. I have a picture of both that if I can scan, I will post. My favorite E-type was a red roadster.
Wow, great thread - love that 3.54 rear end of Black Jag's. I think the "tanked" comment is in context to the '87 crash...about 25 years ago. Before the crash Cole's (are they still around) was auctioning (pristine grant you) S1 OTSs for $170K. The market pretty much evaporated. Coupled with the fact that affordable and reliable convertible options became available in the late 80's (in the mid 80's it was the K car or a British roadster if you wanted a rag top). The rise in value of the E in the 80's I don't think has been equivalent through the last two decades. Regardless, still, I think, the best looking car of all time.

Looks very nice. IMHO, that is the year and model to have, '67 (S1) FHC. It's what I have, so maybe take that with a grain of salt ;-) It's also a great color combo, very desirable for resale. I prefer black (again, what I have). Seems like a very fair price if she runs well. But I just had my entire engine rebuilt for under $5,000, so compared to a Ferrari, very inexpensive to work on.
Well I'd like to see it get the $48,500 - as mentioned, this is very similar to my car both in condition and appearance. Mine is a '66, numbers matching, with a lot of solid work done to the car. My car does have about half the miles though - I'm around 36,000 miles.
I know I said I have been casually looking for a nice Series 1, but what do y'all thinkg about the condition and price on this Series 2? Despite the "interesting" interior color, I am finding myself really liking this one. I can say if I were in the market for an E-Type, I'd go for a Series 2 FHC. I think they are an absolute bargain. Admittedly, I like the look of the S1, but I always liked the S2 interior. I considered selling mine and replacing it with a Series 2. This would fit the bill...

Stumbled across a nice looking S1 FHC on ebay today. Any thoughts on this one? On first glance it looks beautiful, but after looking closer I am getting just a few "lipstick on a pig" vibes. Is anyone familiar with the seller and their work? Auto Exchange out of Alamo, CA. Apparently they are a restorer/seller of vintage Jaguars and Porsche 356's in particular. I spoke briefly with the owner and was given the number for the head mechanic to go over details. Haven't been able to get in touch with him yet. Owner was very nice and seemed very upfront, essentially his business model seems to be buy solid, rust-free CA cars, do some restoration, and sell them quickly. As an example of "lipsticking a pig", these shots stuck out. Obviously there is black overspray where they painted the rear axle and suspension. My assumption has to be that the rear subframe was never taken off the car during restoration, so likely has old original subframe mounts, suspension bushings, and shocks. They just cleaned it all and sprayed a bunch of shiny black paint over it all instead of taking it apart and properly restoring it. Also: Some of the hoses in the engine bay look questionably old. Plug wires old? All new upholstery but didn't bother refinishing switches or steering wheel. In any case, these minor cosmetic quibbles don't necessarily bother me. They are things I would enjoy fiddling with as I felt like doing little projects. What concerns me is spraying a quick coat of paint on the entire rear suspension and brake assembly and calling it "restored". I know this is a very complex area on these cars and prone to leaks and neglect. And then of course the other shortcuts I may not be knowledgeable enough to pick up on. What would you guys peg this car's value at? If nothing else it seems to me to be a solid, pretty, rust-free base upon which to finish a proper mechanical restoration or just renew items as necessary as you drive. I do want a car to DRIVE, not a 100 point trailer queen I rub with q-tips and am scared to use. But I want my driver to be as perfect as realistically possible and be mechanically solid as a rock. Post #93. the link is to one of the most knowledgeable/ best restorer of etypes in country. You will win an award, 95+ pt car. My advice is to buy a former national concours champion that the owner has shown and is now ready to move on to next project. Nothing wrong with a 5-10 yr old 95 pt restored car that was well maintained. Ed
Who is the restorer? That is exactly what I did back in 1999. Bought a car which was 99.79 and on the cover of the JCNA national. It was 4 years out of restoration. I've put several upgrades on the car and try and drive it, as I bought it to drive, still looks beautiful, but certainly not concours. May be the car I never sell, as they are becoming so expensive to restore or purchase in really nice condition.
