I really really really need to replace my aging c4 vette convertible daily driver. I was trying to stay with 8-cylinders since I'm losing so badly to my wife in the cylinder count war, but I can't help but think that a pre-Bangle M3 would be a great car. A convertible keeps that option open, the SMG makes it an easy drive in town, with manual shifting like an F1 always on tap. Plus, it has 100 more horsepower and about the same weight as what I drive now. How can this be a losing proposition?

Anyone with negative feedback on the SMG or the E46 want to comment?

I have a friend who has owned the E46 BMW and he gotten three (one to supersede the last, the SMG is fine for daily use. Also you can get one for a steal now :) as for the convertible, great vert and good sound proofing. :) So yea it will be great!

Thanks, it wasn't the direction I saw myself going, but it seems compelling.

I have a competition package coupe as a daily driver in the north east and love it. Wart on this board has a vert as a daily driver. The steering in the car is beyond great. I personally love the SMG Trans. Auto mode completly sucks though...

I really disliked my E46 M3 Cab (6 speed). Major reasons were cowl shake (if this kind of thing doesn't bother you then cool--it bothered me) and lack of grunt (the car is ultimately fast if you are all over it, but the car weighs too much to feel spritely at lower revs). Also, the reliability of the car is somewhat suspect (I had my engine rebuilt, rear diff replaced, and so on) and I am hearing increasingly bad stories from folks in the local BMW club and at track days.

The coupe, because it weights hundreds of pounds less, is likely a different animal.

Having said that, I thought the interior was very well executed and I liked the overal look.

You are welcome to PM me if you want further details.

I had an E46 convertible for 4 years - daily driver. I really liked it. I did not have the SMG. Its a very nice car - all around. It doesnt excel in any one particularly category - but its an 8/10 in all of them. Its good looking, fast enough, pretty good handling, good interior, good space for 4 people and a trunk. I loved the convertible in So Cal. BMW extended the warranty on the engine to 6 years. Mine was very reliable - apart from a few recalls. There was a stretech - Oct 2001 to May 2002 - when engines failed. Thats why they extended the warrany for 2 years. But apart from that - I dont think there were any extraordinary issues.

SMG is cool but not for me. I have an 04 M3 convertible is 6S and I love it. If u use it as a DD I think u will find great use out of it.
