Operating a BMW V10 out of warranty is...

  1. Bad idea, most likely to end badly.

  2. Horrible idea, definitely will end badly.

  3. Insane/Masochistic idea, waking labotomy is probably less painful.

  4. Great idea, I need some shadenfreudian entertainment.

Anyone ever had one of these? Saw (heard actually) one over the weekend blowing past us on full song. I'm sure it had an exhaust, but it sounded incredible.

Our last BMW made me swear off the brand ('99 323i, 12 months old), would buying one of these out of warranty be crazy? Would it be better or worse than the turbo V12 version of the M-B CL600?

M and AMG cars are completely different beasts with M being more of an all around performance car and AMGs being known to be more muscle-car-like(brutally fast in a straight line, but not much else). I'd say drive both and decide which you'd prefer, then do your homework and find the best one you can.

I've had an 07 E63 M6 and recently sold my 08 E60 M5. I love M cars (had an E46 M3 as well). For me they have been completely reliable. I firmly believe the M5 is the best all around 5 seater sports sedan in terms of all around performance. I had an S55 AMG and I just feel that BMW handling and feel far exceeds most AMG cars.
The first mod you MUST do on the NA V10 is the exhaust. I put an Eisenmann Race exhaust on both cars and it sounds so clean and "F1" like. That is another thing - the E60/63's are the last of the pure NA V10's from BMW. I am not a fan of the new F10 both in engine design or its lousy banal aesthetics.

The one issue to be aware of on 2006-08 models is the VANOS pump failure. So I'd get an extended warranty if I were you. This happened recently to my friend's 06 E60.

It is such a thrill to drive, but you have to keep it in the high RPM's to hear the engine sing and perform. The "M" active seats are super cool as well. SMG you have to drive in manual mode - automatic is rubbish.
    I miss mine already

I believe the OP is referring to the E63 M6 as opposed to the Mercedes E63 AMG.

I had a 07 M6 and I put a ton of upgrades (Tuning, headers, exhaust, pully, suspension, wheels,) including the ACS rear (the rear end is pretty ugly stock) and the only way it was ever fun to drive was in S6 mode and no matter what I did to it, it was still too heavy to handle well.

I currently own a 2013 M3 and have owned two BMWs before. I have not had a problem with them but.

Most independant shops will till you they tend to have electrical problems after the fourth year. I am not sure what the cost to fix it is or if it a constant nusiance repair.

I own a alot of cars, it is my hobby. Since my mechanic who handles my european and exotic cars told me this I had my wife buy a lexus instead of the 5 series she wanted.

I later that week bought the M3. oh well so much for will power :)

No personal experience with the E60 outside of warranty, but I'm always hesitant on any BMW past warranty. I do love that engine, though. Some guy in Maryland swapped one into his E30...amazing.

Too bad BMW didn't bring over the E61 M5 (Touring version). That would be my dream wagon. I asked BMW North America for assistance in importing one and they just said to find an RI to do the work. :(

If the price is right with complete service records and it will be a secondary fun car, I'd get one.

What would repairing a VANOS system cost out of pocket?

We had two '06 E60 M5, the vanos pump failed in the first car, however, it did not fail in the second car.
I would be more concerned with a failure of the SMG and cost associated with its repair. Bottom line I would not own one out of warranty, PERIOD!
They have terrible gas mileage and there is no way to keep your foot of the peddle!
