Hello forum members. As you all see I am pretty new on this forum, I am an M3 owner and pretty much been a BMW fanatic most my life. Recently I have been looking at some F1 355 Berlinettas, thinking of upgrading my M3. While searching the adds, I noticed that some of the 355s and other models with low mileage (5k, 12k) had their 30k service done. I am not sure why would you do a $10k service on a such a low mileage vehicle. Is there something I am missing ? What service are you usually doing at 30k miles if it has been allready done much earlier ? Thank you all for your time accorded to my post.

The reason is that Ferrari (and many other manufacturers) recommends a calendar time interval as well as the simple mileage. That interval is either 3 or 5 years.

So a 10 year old 355 should have had two major services by now, even if it only has 10,000 miles.

Thanks Don, your response makes sense. The 355 I have seen is a 1999 model with 5k miles and 30k mile service allready done. Thanks a lot for your response, it is well appreciated.

The 355 has belt driven cams, like all the earlier V-8 cars. But instead of two belts like the early cars, it has a single belt. And, it has five valves in every cylinder. When that belt lets go, instead of taking out one bank, it takes out both, and a whole lot of valves go into the trash. Seems to me its well over $30K to fix it after. While many want to question the change intervals on the cheaper cars, you dont see to many wanting to risk it on a car like this, and especially if its up for sale. Its a good selling point. At least if the work they paid for was actually done and/or you dont get a phony reciept.
