I'm so stoked--my wife gave me a present early, so that I could enjoy it before the holiday crush. I got an X4 formula x-treme set, and then two additional FLY cars--a 365GTB/4 Daytona (in Fly Yellow) and a BMW M3 GTR ALMS. These damn things work so well, and being able to slide around the turns is so cool. I do have a few questions, though.

First, the Daytona is much harder to drive than the other cars (sliding at a much lower speed). While this is probably scale realism in comparsion to the other cars, I'm a bit bummed to see the Ferrari trounced by the other cars. I would imagine that there are an assortment of hop-ups (different tires, magnets, etc.) and perhaps maybe even some adjusments on the car. I would appreciate any information/advice, and any sources to turn to (websites, books, etc.).

Second, this set won't stay permanently set up. Do I need to do anything when storing the cars (in terms of concerns about lube, humidity, etc.)?

Third, it would be cool to have a couple more Ferraris. Any thoughts on manufacturers/sources in the US?

Good wife you got there. Buy her some flowers.

I'm no expert, but I think there is not much in regards to storing other than at room temp. Actually I think these cars are so pretty to look at, I just have them on display all the time.

You could add a magnet or a stronger magnet to the Daytona, that by itself will allow you higher speeds, but also takes a bit away from the fun of powerslides. There are also some very sticky silicone wheels available. Aside from that there are a bunch of tweaking tricks, but quite frankly I'd rather try to find another slower car that matches the speed of the Daytona so you have even partners for a race. I have the 512S from Fly and it powerslides so strongly, that I can only drive at half speed. Heck, it is so sensitive, that the one straight that narrows the track is enough at high speed to send it careening off the track. Sounds like a match for your Daytona.

Also just do a search for Ferrari 1/32 on ebay and you'll find a ton of Ferrari slot cars. But be careful: Older models are more for display, they rarely have mechanics good enough to match modern cars.

Carrera makes some Ferraris. I have their F1, but they suck. Also have the 166 Uovo, which also sucks, but looks great. Also have the Enzo, which is a very forgiving car. Get two Enzos and let your kids play with them. Actually one Enzo driven by a kid vs you on the Daytona would probably make for a real challenge for you.

Let me rephrase this: I got a bottle of special juice to pour onto the contact strips of the cars. It makes a world of difference:

The Ferrari F1 and the 166MM Uovo from Carrera needed always basically full power to get going, which basically threw them out of the turns. With a few drops of the juice they need the limited amount of controller power like every other car and become a lot more controllable. They're still difficult to drive, but at least there is fun in that challenge.

Sadly the Carrera Sauber F1 still sucks (too much realism on Carrera's part maybe?). This thing needs a stronger magnet to stay on the track at all.
