If the early TR's are the same mechanically as the late 512bb why don't I hear people complaining about the unreliability or expensive repair issues with them? Thinking about an early TR but getting afraid to end up with a car I can't drive when I want.

I didn't know there was much of a maintence difference issue between early and late TR's as long as the early TR had the pump chain upgrade.
Why is everyone looking to get early TR's all of a sudden?
John, I haven't seen your 328 around Richmond Hill. I live in the north end close to Yonge.

It's not early TR that are similar mechanically to late 512bbi -- it's only early (about pre-'87) euro version TR (these are K-Jet without Lambda) that are similar to 512bbi. One could even argue that an early euro TR is better than a 512bbi because it has an ignition system that actually works ;)

Steve, I see you all the time driving around Boulder in your Testarossa. We should try to meet up sometime. It would be a pleasure as you provide such great advise and counsel on this site.

Any chance that you'll be going to Cino's tomorrow AM for Coffee/Cars?

Not unless you can change the physical laws of the universe -- we moved to Round Rock TX this summer.

But I appreciate the kind words and thoughts -- and wish you the best in trying to keep Boulder rational (or, should I say, return Boulder to reality ;))

The 2 cars share almost nothing really, even the CIS is different (ok the gearbox interchanges). I wont argue that the aproach to diag and repair of the CIS is similar but thats it.

In repsonse to the original question, since the cars really have little in common where you can interchange parts directly you cant really compare the two. I think typically a TR gets used more (and abused more) than a boxer so its repair bills are greater. The gearboxes in the TR's seem to have more failures which I blame on more HP and more weight while using the same type of gearbox as the boxers. If you buy a boxer you wont use it as much, its not as easy to live with as a TR so naturally the TR will need more $$$$ to keep it on the road vs the boxer.

Yes, Dell is here in a big way -- along with their baseball stadium ;)

The scary part is Austin -- which is trying its hardest to be just like Boulder. The don't quite have as much of other people's money as Boulder, so they can't do as many stupid things as Boulder, but they are running a close second.

This may be so, but I just had mine out this morning. Oh boy! What a blast! Even after all these years, she still makes me giggle "like a school boy.."

My brother had an early TR (from new-- sold a few years ago), and he keeps telling me how much better a car the TR was over the Boxer. How Ferrari spent all this time listening to the customers, and incorporated all that feedback into the TR.

I tend to forget all about that when I start my carb 512BB, though!

So how many miles you've done this year, Shamile? I did about 175 miles per day in my Boxer the first two weeks. And the 550 gets driven more! ;)

I was considering buying a TR several years ago before I bought my BB and it was JRV from the other site who steered me towards a Boxer as he mentioned BBs are much more reliable and cheaper to maintain as they dont have as many electrical addons and additional components to the motors, I always wanted a BB anyway but was swayed towards the TR when Miami Vice was on, then I was a bit dissapointed after driving a TR as it felt very bulky/wide and heavy
