My '72 Dino GT met the reserve on eBay, then I found out the bidder wanted to do a partial trade for a vintage 'vette- I said no, and now the auction has ended, I thought I was getting the $85k, and I can't get the guy to respond to emails or call me- I guess I have to file a formal complaint against him with eBay, reach out to the underbidders, and/or start fresh- Any other advice? Comments? Is this a common occurence?

Contact the next highest bidder, offer him a second chance offer on it.

If you were willing to take trades, you would have said so in the listing.

My experience with ebay is they will tell you they are sorry it didn't work out and tell you to re-list it.

I second what Dave says all ebay will do is comp you for a relisting after you deal with their customer service you won't really get anywhere.

yes, ebay sucks. i had to list my 2 ferrari's twice, and ended up selling the Dino and the GTB through the other online ads. ebay may be a good marketing / advertising medium, but its not all that great for high dollar items. seems like parts / ect are better buys on ebay than cars. just my .02.

The more I hear about ebay, the more I believe that this sort of thing is common. High or low dollar amounts doesn't seem to matter. A friend listed his Honda on Ebay twice and got deadbeats both times.

FWIW the best ebay buyers were the one's that saw my listing and bought without going through ebay

I have had over 1000 listings on eBay (since Aug98) which includes selling 2 cars and buying 2 cars as well as lots of vintage watches. All experiences have been good but I did notice more so this year than in the past - complaints about dead beats. I think it is related to the growth factor. As more people get Internet access or just discovery eBay (internationally) there is a learning curve re "conduct" as well as just bad people that are trying to take advantage of others. In general, eBay is based upon the concept that people want to do the right thing. That principle unfortunately does get diluted. That is why it is important to lead feed back. So people realize there is a consequence to their action. eBay has always credited me for dead beats - you just have to wait and go through the process.

I'm not a ebay expert, but looking at the bidding history makes me think someone must have bid very close to 85K for the final to be that high.

The next lowest actual number I see is 79.2K, which isn't bad either.

One of the biggest faults about Ebay and of course one of the wonders, is that any dope with an email address can bid on a million dollar item and simply not pay up. I've had kids bid on golf clubs I've put up only to get a note from their folks that "sorry, my kid should not have been bidding, please relist"...Ebay needs to require a credit card and for folks who are deadbeats, they can at a minimum, go after them for a percentage of the purchase price and this would seriously curtail the increase in dead beats.

Just a nightmare dealing with irresponsible bidders on eBay. Now I'm going to move down the list of bidders that this idiot cancelled out with his nonsense. I mean, a '65 'Vette is a nice car, but to take his car in partial trade, when he's asking too much, AND the car is in Mexico... I mean, how many cars were chopped to build that one, right? Just a stupid waste of my time, and just aggravating. Allright... Who do I pay for the therapy session?

Bidder is a scam artist unless you had agreed about the Corvette prior to the bid. File complaint with ebay before you do anything else - its not the answer, but its a good start. In the future, do not allow bidders to bid without first contacting you.

    Good Luck,

    Art S.

You can probably get it relisted at no cost... e-bay (for cars) should only be looked at as a way to let people know your car is out ther and for sale.

Just joined this web site and happy to be here. Good idea to have levels for subscriptions. I am also a member of the Early S Registry (and owner of an early 911S ...) and we should do it since there are far more posters than members and that impacts the club finances negatively

Anyway, eBay can be difficult. Now, this blue 365GTC/4 is re-listed. I tried to contact the owner 4 (!) times via eBay without a single response whatsoever. Especially since I live in SoCal and was really interested in the car and wanted to have a look.

This is exactly the same car that was sold for $72k a couple of months ago (and written up in SCM). Coincidentally, now there is also an ad for the car on FerrariAds.com - for $82k. Not that I have anything against flipping and making a dime on cars, it would just be great if the owner would get back to interested parties, eBay or not.

I've been semi-active on Ebay for 9+ years and while I can understand your expectation that someone who wins a high priced item and doesn't pay - You've got to follow the Ebay process to get your listing fees back; first submit a payment reminder, then file a non-paying bidder disoute, and finally follow up with escalating it for final value and leaving an unpaid item strike.

In all reality, Ebay is better used as a marketing tool than a sales vehicle in large ticket items unless the seller can let the buyer examine it.

There's always a flip side to this coin....I once WON an auction for a 86 Ferrari 328, and showed up IN-PERSON to drive the car, inspect it, and lay down my deposit on the winning bid with a certified check. I left with a bill of sale, and a copy of my check. A week later, the car 'developed problems' and disappeared. I did get my check back, but I'm guessing the seller got a phone call from someone who offered him more money for the car after the auction - so he dumped me. It happens all the time. The only way to buy/sell cars is with finances in-full, up front, with all parties in-person. Its harder and harder to trust other selling 'means' these days...

Hey, Mike- My business partner has that 365 GTC4 at his house in West Hollywood. I listed it in FerrariAds for him, and he has it on eBay. He didn't know that messages could be sent thru eBay, so he never thought to look. I just explained it to him. Also, the car was indeed 72,100 on eBay in June. After paying over $8000 to make engine repairs that were needed, because the seller was such a lying, dishonest piece of s**t, the car is for sale at $82000, leaving room for a $100 "profit" for all the trouble endured over the last 6 months, with ONE day of driving enjoyment. The car is perfect now.

Thanks for the clarification. It was a bit frustrating not getting any responses. Sorry to hear about the $ you had to put in. It looked and sounded like a fantastic car the first time around. Did you do a thorough PPI then?

I might be interested if my Zagato plans (Buying a Junior Z and Appia GTE) don't pan out as expected ...

Our mechanic has been through the car from head to toe, and has signed off on it as ready for a new home. Really a wonderful car.

Only problem with an unpaid item dispute, is that usually it takes MONTHS to get it resolved, and it is still a pain to get Ebay to credit you.

Leave the guy a negative feedback, and strike his account, and call this number as well:
    866-668-6774
    or
    801-545-2971

That'll actually get you a real person that you can bug about your credit.

Wrong, 3 days to send a payment reminder, 4 days after that you can file an unpaid item dispute and 7 days later the seller can close the dispute to receive Ebay fees back and the buyer gets an unpaid item strike.

On the other hand, some of the general popua;tion do not know that Ebay allows each person seven user ids, which can mean that if they trash one profile they just leapfrog to the next AND since Ebay does not verify the names that members use, then it is possible for someone to lie about who they are to create another 7 userids. I just wouldn't do it on the same hard drive as they set heavy cookies and store info there.

On the other hand Yahoo auctions requires a credit card to confirm identity (only for verification and they never charges you).
