seller was about 2 miles from my house. picked it up friday morning..... 59,XXX miles and in great shape. really clean paint (for a black car) previous owner bought it with 4k on the clock when it was a couple years old. has been lowered, aligned, upgraded to 16' fuchs (7,8"s) and some sort of beefy exhaust. Let's see...it's an SC w/sport seats and spoilers front and rear...you lucked out with the previous owner. It's a huge plus knowing a car's service history.
the "oh well" whats another couple hundred bucks syndrome hit. exhaust is "bursch" (sp?). makes a racket past 4k when u get on it. getting the stock exhaust also. i guess it has a turbo tail (factory as it has the porsche script and insignia are on it?) and turbo bumperettes. wheels were painted to match the weissach edition. would love to move the 8"s to the front and go 9"s on the rear but i don't think i could match the wheel paint to my standards.... badly needs a short shift kit. 1-2 is like 4 feet.
keep the 7" in front and go 9" for the rears. the 9" will cost you approx $1400 - $1700 for the pair depending on their condition but they will look great. we can discuss tire options when you are ready. the turbo tail was a factory option for the sc. looks like a nice car henry...and keep the bursch!
Nice looking car. The car I kept the longest (9 years) was my black/black 83 SC. For me, this says a lot about these cars because my average car ownership duration is under 17 months. Re: Fuch wheel thicknesses, I would keep what you have or go with 8" fronts/9" rears. Changing to 7"/9" would make the car understeer way too much IMHO. But then, this might be okay with you if you don't plan to drive it aggressively i.e. track the car. I had such a setup in my SC, but didn't like it for the track.
Henry, BURSCH is correct spelling. All US 911's from '75 through '89 had those bumperettes. ('74 and Euro 911's had narrower bumperettes). the 8" wheels will NOT fit on the front. (You can put 8" Fuchs on the front if they are from a 944 Turbo). You can put 9" Fuchs on the rear because the Fuchs 9 inch wheels have the extra width on the inside of the wheel. I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference between 8's and 9's on the rear unless you autocross or.... Matching wheel finish, you might want to re-do all 4 at once. Try to drive a short shift car before you do it. Many don't like it. I've heard people say not to get the Weissach short shift kit. Gorgeous car. Tom '80 SC targa
Absolutely fantastic looking car. Something about those old air-cooled 911s....man oh man. Beautiful. Enjoy her!
i was told the turbo tail was not a factory option....(?). former owner told me the bursch exhaust is some type of racing version. less baffles or something. makes a "non porsche" type scream above 4-5 k rpm when u get on it. any thoughts on an aftermarket exhaust that'll keep the air cooled sound ? do the rs door panels only come in black ?
In 78, the first year for the SC that tail was not an option, there was an all rubber tail though. I bought a 78 new on tourist delivery with the tail. I would have ordered that tail if I could have as I ordered everything else on the option list including sports seats. Fantastic car and unbreakable.
Beautiful car!!! How's the A/c work with that black? My '86 Cabriolet , the a/c sure isn't the strong suit , but then again if driving it , most lekely to have top down.
