In an article in PitPass.com Bernie has said as much.

But, was this out of belief that the FIA was wrong (don’t forget he was on board for the Chicane), 20/20 hind sight, or that he’s tied into F1 revenue until the end of 2006? Read here. If the teams were to just get up and walk out at the end of this year he’d be left holding the bag for hundreds of millions of dollars on a loan that was taken out against F1 revenue? Is Bernie really siding with the teams or really just himself? And if he is siding with the teams does this show that indeed F1’s future is with the seven teams threatening to break away?

    That stupid old toad!

He could have fixed things at Indianapolis. All he had to do was make the right announcements to the fans in the stands to explain what was happening. He should have also asked them to kindly refrain from throwing any belongings onto the track. then he should have had the fans fill out details about their expenditure to collect data on how much refund they are looking for.

The fans would have realized that atleast F1 cares. The next step would have been to sit down with the 7 Michelin team, FIA, IMS authorities and Michelin BEFORE LEAVING THE USA to determine a fair amount for refunds per head. Using the data collected from the fans the refunds could have been made in an orderly fashion. the data could have also been used to determine how to divide up the share for the refunds. No one would have wanted just one entity to foot the entire bill and everyone would have pitched in a little.

Common sense is not really common these days!
