I need some help here. My sister just called to tell me that my niece has been tied down in a hospital bed for three days. This follows a music concert she went to where she dissapeared for 24 hours and was delivered to the hospital in a psychotic state.

The doctor's believe that she was slipped a large dose of exctasy. She has no clue where she is and can't remember what she was doing at the concert, who she met or what her own name is. My sister and her husband have driven to the Eureka, CA. hospital to see if they will release her to the care of a Santa Cruz hospital.

If it was a large dose of ecstasy, could she suffer perminant damage? I don't know enough about this drug and what it does to people in a high dose. All I know is that my sister andher husband are a wreck right now and the family is pretty worried.

Receiving a large quantity of exctasy does not cause lasting damage but it has been known to cause short term memory loss. Occasional use of exctasy will have lasting effects, much more harmful than cigarettes or alcohol for instance. I know many who have tried and/or use it personally including some ex-girlfriends. What your niece needs is rest and to recoop. She will be alright. Be thankful she didn't end up like Natalie Holloway.

extasy is not as harmful in the long run

dunno about a large dose but even a small dose can be harmful if conditions are not right
if you heat up too much, it may cause brain damage, even just one hit

im not doc, but one of my friends was slipped a hit by his now ex-girlfriend, I went to the hospital the following day w/ him just to make sure everything was okay and that is what the doctor told us

MDMA, or ecstacy, increases heart rate and blood pressure significantly.

Abuse can cause damage to the heart and brain. (Long term abuse, unless already suffering from a condition that a sharp increase in BP or hear trate can aggravate, not normally one time use.)

It can reduce the flow of seratonin in the brain. Seratonin imbalance has been linked to depression, anxiety, panic disorder, and impulse control.

But, most research shows that the effects are reversible with time.

This from my sister the drug and alcohol counselor.

I'll see what more I can get when she has more than a minute.

Your very lucky she ended up at a hospital instead of one of her friends trying to help her through it at some house. Ecstasy makes you very thirsty appartly, some people have died from drinking too much water after they've ingested the drug. Hope everything turns out fine.

    Sorry to hear that Peter.

I've treated several ecstacy o/ds. No idea how much they took but all recovered after anywhere from 1-4 days. Treatment was monitoring (ICU is good) and supportive care only - IVs, etc. No lasting negative effects in any of these people. Will say a prayer that your neice has the same good outcome. BTW, agree with Wax re: don't take her home too soon. Treat the patient not the freakin insurance co.

    Best,
    Tom

Single hit overdose/dose should not be long lasting, but get Neurologist involved NOW. Also, needs rape kit if they have not done so, pregnancy test too. Sorry for blunt, but it is an issue. STD kit as well if it was good ER it was done already.
Make sure they look at liver enzymes too, as the cutting agents in the street drug have their own toxicities.
PM me, I'm in middle of ICU ugliness today but I will try to help
Where is she? City/hospital, how old...<18 is pediatric.
Jim, thanks for PM of this thread, I have been off board.

May god be with her and family.

    Just read more of thread...
Get her to a real big city hospital with a toxicologist. Eureka/Santacruz is nowhere's ville.
BIG City BIG gun docs. 3 days tied to bed?? WTF?
    GTF outta there.

    Agree with The Butcher.

Hard to say after it goes on for a while. Rarely other conditions could present after a high dose, like hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain) can present with confusion.

Absolutely impossible to say with out seeing her and her labs, X-rays etc.

Prayers are with you, as a father of a pack of kids, I hate to hear this stuff!

This story gets crazy! Her and her BF were camping at a concert. On Saturday, she said she did not feel good and was going back to their tent. Her BF stayed behind with some other friends to watch the ending of an act that was on stage. When he got to the tent, she was gone. He was up all night looking for her and she came back at 9:00AM all whacked out. He put her in the car.

Once on the road, she went a bit bozo and starting yelling about LSD and rape. In her rage, she tried to get her BF to crash the car. He got pulled over and my niece kept going on. The cops wanted to arrest him until he got the right story to the cops. The cops took her to the drunk tank while he tried for 6 hours to get her to a hospital. A judge finally approved her release to an ambulence.

The doctors at the hospital at this time cannot pinpoint what she took, but whatever it was, it triggered some sort of a physco breakdown. They gave her a sedative and she is sleeping at this time.

Thanks for the replies so far. I hope she'll be OK!

I would follow that advice.. it might not be a bad idea to check for evidence of sexual activity.. with that kind of breakdown, she might have passed out and.. well, you get the idea. Just check it out.

    Thoughts and prayers..

So maybe it's not Ecstacy. could be LSD, GHB (http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/publications/factsht/gamma/) or who knows what. Six hour delay in the drunk tank sux bigtime! She should have had medical screening on booking (SOP), been evaluated by the jail doc and sent to ER - doesn't need a judge's order for transfer to the ER. It's a doc order unless CA is different from the rest of the world (another thread at another time).

I would assume they did toxicology screens at the hospital so what she took should be forthcoming.

Jeez, she could have tripped and fallen down, whacked her head hard and turned up with all these symptoms. Did they do a head CT?

I did 15 years ER and 5 years of Corrections Medicine (jail doc) and this kind of stuff pisses me off. Delay, delay. Save a buck. Not trying to be a pot-stirrer here, but...

Keep up the running updates, Peter.

Thats the big point right there. If it goes on for days could be a sub dural hematoma, stroke, hypoxia or other things that need a DX right away. Can't just blame it on intoxication unless the organic probs have been ruled out.
