    I was wondering....

With the price of ECUs (What do these cost?) I wanted to know if it would be possible to "backup" your ECUs. So, if they fail you can just reprogram them.

Failure of an ECU is generally not a memory issue. The internal hardware died. The only back up would be a spare box.

They are not made to Milspec standards you know. The dummies in the white lab coats that design this junk forget we are going to install them in something that will shake, vibrate, crash, get wet, get hot, get cold etc etc and they want to make the components as robust as (sometimes less so) your home entertainment components that just sit there.

    I agree with you.........

What I want to know is, could you clone a good ecu and store the info on a computer, so that if yours goes bad you could purchase another chip set and burn in the program.

I think that would depend if Ferrari inserted EEPROM copy protection in their chipsets to prevent unauthorized readouts. If that is the case, then an encrypted ID number flashed into the EEPROM must match the ID of the control program that accesses the data. Wrong ID = ACCESS DENIED

I just had a dash cluster (is this the ECU?) replaced in my 360 spider (from a boosted 30 AMP jumpstart done by former owner at time of PPI the set the mileage to 555555) and it cost (him) about $3200 for the dash cluster, plus a few hours to install, test, etc. - about $4K total. Ferrari of New England had to send it back to Italy to either be reprogrammed, or be provided with a new one. I had to provide documentation regarding the miles so they could set it accordingly. The service techs told me how the device is programmed and accessed was "proprietary" and that dealers did not have ability to adjust dat ain the device (other than resetting codes via the computer they can connect).

You must have an electronic odometer?

What I'm talking about is the ECU's not the dash cluster. I know if you talk to Ferrari they will tell you no way. But, any electronics guy in this group think otherwise? I don't see why it would be a problem to backup this firmware incase it breaks.

It was the thread on the alarm fobs that got me thinking this is possible.
