Before putting my car into storage last year, I had an oil change done at the dealer. The car takes either 8.5 or 8.7 quarts, but they charged me for 10. I tried checking the level and it looked high (though it's hard seeing it's fresh oil) and the gauge in my car that checks the oil level was 'above' the normal area. I called the dealer and they said they know how much is supposed to go in and your fine. My car on start up after sitting for a day or more will blow a puff of bluish smoke. I took it in to a non dealer and had them drain out a good quart and it looks like the level is correct now. I'm still getting the smoke on cold start ups still. I drove the car about 400 miles with it somewhat over filled. What kind of damage can occur from this? Car runs like a top. It's a 1998 Porsche Boxster.

    Thanks for you help!

I just changed the oil on my 2000 boxster S and it swallowed a full 9 quarts, but I let it drain for an hour(played video games) then came back and filled it up. Mine has been running fine and is slightly below the full mark. You never want to over fill though....the drain plug is right in the center on mine it is a hex bolt flush mounted to the oil pan. Keep an eye on the dip stick, not the electronic dash level.

It is common ad advised to add an extra quart of oil in the 308 series as the engine can get starved on hard cornering, the other fix was to add a 328 sump pan and pick-up tube which held an extra quart. I run about an inch above full and have no problems for 12 years. On other cars I think the oil cause blow by but evenh though I not anexpert here I have had my cover off at least 4 times and it holds lots of oil most is in the pipeline and oil cooler/filter when the engine is running. I would be more concerned with not enough. BTW I have never noticed an appreciable oil loss even after 1000 miles?
