After reading any number of threads here that discuss Testarossas, the overriding theme is that the cars are great fun but they can be a maintenance nightmare and money pit due primarily to the fuel injection and ignition systems. There are so many marginal connectors, finicky relays, and balky sensors in those systems that we are forced to rely on the good graces of the resident experts here at FChat to help us trace down the latest gremlin. The primary problem seems to be that the electronics in question were the first generation of this kind of system - never a good thing. These problems are exacerbated by the extraordinary cost of some of the parts and the some that are beginning to be impossible to find.

Now for the blasphemous question - What would it take to rip all of that stuff out and switch to a modern programmable engine management system with a direct ignition system AND electronic fuel injection?

This would seem to make the cars more reliable and less expensive in the long run to maintain. For those of us who plan to keep our cars for a long time (I've had mine for 12 years now), this might be a way to keep them on the road without having access to a money tree. Obviously, any changes would be reversible and the parts taken off would live in a box in my garage forever - or until someone wants to restore it to original condition in 50 years.

BTW, I have no idea if these systems will pass emissions testing.

they will better be able to pass emsissions as the system is programable

The CIS system is VERY reliable. That system was used on Mercedes cars for years when the brand was building good cars. But the real down fall of the system is its restrictive nature.

By going to an EFI set up you will unlock more horsepower and you will improve fuel consumption, and emissions. There are really only positives to change over to this set-up. The only thing that will suffer is your wallet from the parts and install. Motec systems are great and you can even go as far as a sequentail set up to get even better power and driveability.

The main issue with the TR is the crumby electrical system in it. The fuse panel itself is a really big weak point , aswell as the crappy conectors as you have noted. If you were going to go with a system like an EFI set up I would make it a stand alone system with its own fuse panel and wiring. The only wiring from the car harness would be from the ignition switch and power feeds (which you could wire seperately aswell).

I say go for it. The improvement will be weel worth the time and espense.

I have electromotive TEC3 on my 930 turbo . i also have also bought another system for a 930 that i bought for a steal from a friend in need of money. is it half of the system needed for my boxer? i think the tec 3 amd motec systems for the 6 cyl cars is 3k. double the money for 12 cyls. if i currently have the proper tec 3 system and only need to provide for the other bank, i may do the efi on my boxer as well.

I am examining just such a thing on a 512 BBi (even more blasphemy).

I spoke to a number of knowledgable people at SportAuto, Norwood, and Carobu. Conversion to EFI will yield <10% improvement in power but:
    1. It will dramatically improve cold start, low end torque, and general drivability.
    2. It will improve emissions (esp. with closed loop lambda) and fuel economy.
    and the best of all:
    3. It will enable you to do the REAL work on the induction system, cams, valves, and ports to gain real power like 20%.

CIS impedes airflow and cause trouble with manifold at idle, requiring dull cams and other accomodations. Going to EFI liberates you from that problem.

For a 12cyl running full seq injection and individual coil-on-plug DI (not wasted spark), you'll need a Motec M820 w/2 ignition expanders, 12 ignitors, etc. Plus custom fab of a new fuel rail (the CIS fuel delivery system won't be suitable), and machining of the ports to accomodate the electromechanical injectors.

This is not a cheap job.
