It's been about 2 years since I've immersed myself in the culture of Ferraris, buying first an F355 and an F430. Love the cars... In those 2 years, I've also been meeting some great people at some Ferrari gatherings.

However, other than the cool owners, there are an equal amount of cocky, arrogant, ultracompetitive, egocentric dorks who seemingly have bought a Ferrari to overcompensate for their lack of social skills, or any other intangible quality other than the fact that they can afford a Ferrari.

Do others notice this? To top it off, they use their Ferrari ownership as a self-bought medal of honor. Sorry if this comes across as judgmental. Of course, I have my own flaws...but I do not imploy Ferrari ownership to feel superior to others as some do.

I guess it's par for the course...

I have had my Ferrari for eight years, and have not come across any people of the type you describe. (There is one guy I don't particularly care for personally, but that has nothing to do with his ownership of a Ferrari or his attitude toward it.)

Maybe you should try the Rocky Mountain chapter of FCA. They're all great people.

That's funny... I can't even begin to count the number of cocky, arrogant, ultracompetitive, egocentric dorks who DON'T own Ferraris....

But they do find other ways to overcompensate for their lack of social skills, and other issues... sometimes they own a business, sometimes they're in the military, sometimes they are just outright insecure...

I'm pretty worldly...been around the block more times than many, and I submit that the display of superiority you bemoan is across the board...and in no way limited to Ferrari ownership.

you're right, mike. "no way limited to Ferrari ownership."

Actually, I've owned a Ferrari since the early 80's and I believe that there were more jerks in the old days than today.

Maybe it was the "Magnum" thing followed by the "Miami Vice" thing, maybe it was the 12 cylinder vs 8 cylinder vs "don't call that Dino a Ferrari!" thing, or maybe it was just my impression as a young lad in what was then more of an old man's domain.

Today's owners to me seem a lot less "wine and cheesy" and a lot more passionate about the cars they own. To me, F-chat is living proof of the love of Ferrari way beyond just having one sit in your garage.

And, that being said, I would bet 99% of the owners I've met are far from jerks and most really like what they own, respect the marque, and respect other owners.

I think that today (2010) we live in a culture where everyone is right all the time--and willing to fight about it any time and any place. Just try to bring in physics into a argument about which is more important TQ or HP. But I digress.

If you think the Ferrari crowd on the internet is eqocentric, go visit the Corvette, Viper, and Mustang groups. Anything but the party line is squashed rather completely.

I blame the internet for allowing people to associate only with people they agree with and never bother to even try to listen to arguments from the other side. Once the major media outlets followed suit, it was all down hill from there.

Now, I have visited some of those above groups in person an never actually ran into such a person as OP implicated--close, and he was a ex-politician run out of office for being corrupt, but not such a bad guy in peson. But I digress, again.

I think Viper owners are the worst. There's varying levels of good and bad people with any car association. I'd expect Ferrari owners to be less egocentric because they have achieved the pinacle of vehicle ownership.

FWIT the crowd on here is more more tame and welcoming of different opinions compared to some other car forums out there. About 6 weeks ago I began thinking of a 3rd car and thought maybe a C6 Vette or Boxster S would be a good choice. Found a very active vette forum and although I expected them to back the vette it was a bit out of control. Don't dare question anything and it always boils down to TQ or HP.

I agree what he said "Lambo owners are bigger dorks. :)

I happen to belong to the Porsche and Ferrari clubs and by experience the Ferrari crowd is
more laid back, less competitive and more helpful.

The cool people are here, FCA, FOC, and at tracks

Here in SoBe there must be a few 100 Ferraris and plenty of them are clueless dorks with bad attitudes and probably no clue about Ferrari history

I heard about 1 guy who bought a 360 spyder to pick up chicks but had to get rid of it when he couldn't afford it anymore

I have run into my fair share of cocky arrogant egocentric Ferrari owners. The one thing they all had in common, other than owning a Ferrari, was that none of them were really interested in the car as anything other than a status symbol.

I will also disagree about the Viper and Vette guys. Ive owned both and they dont seem to be any more disproportionately cocky arrogant and egocentric than anyone else. In fact I found the Viper owners to be very down to earth.

I encounter this type of people but owning cheaper cars like Mercedes Benz, Lexus, Range Rover and BMW. SPECIALLY BMW.

Note, I do know some folks with BMWs that are good people, but those are a handful.

What you describe is what I dislike about F-ownership. Owning other brands allows one to not have to pay too much attention to it and even become indifferent towards it.

    Hey now!

The Vette forum people are something else at times. Lots of good folks but let's just say there are some people on those boards who have a cow if you say you like something else. There are a few guys who own FCars, PCars and LCars over there as well. Some of those boys are 110% all American Chevrolet or walk. LOL. You see it more with the C6 and C5 owners. The C1, 2, 3 folks are usually pretty down to earth.

FChat is very worldly in comparison.
